It's always been a derogatory term for black people. When did you ever hear anyone ever say, "What a nice nigger he is?" They didn't even use the word in "Love Thy Neighbour" which supposedly exposed bigotry.

My grandparents were older than Guy Gibson and I never heard them refer to "a certain colour in general" as nigger.

As I understand it the word entered the english language from the french
"negre". In Hungary the normal word - used today for a black person - is
......"niggar" !!!
For David Johnson and any liberal minded folk let me say - as an old
imperialist - that we British gentlemen always used the word sparingly.
At a reception at Government House, Simla, in the 1890`s a young
subaltern told an Indian waiter to "Hurry up with my drink, you damned
nigger !" He was overheard by Lord William Beresford VC, the Viceroy`s
aide-de-camp, who went over to the young englishman and said, "This is
Viceroy`s house, you are his guest, that is a servant of the Viceroy, I am
his aide - and if I ever hear you insult an Indian again like that in my
presence I will take you by the scruff of the neck and kick you down the
bloody stairs of Government House ! Now get out !"

That reminds me of the one where an aide rushed in a few days later at the start of the Indian Mutiny and said to the Viceroy, "Sir, sir, the wogs are revolting" To which the Viceroy replied, "Oh I don't know, some of them are really quite nice chaps"

At the end of the day it is just a word, and I iterate, wog is a far more demeaning and insulting term than nigger.

"wog is a far more demeaning and insulting term than nigger"

Around 30 years ago there used to be a UK car number plate around, WOG 1
I reckon that was quietly recalled at some point by DVLA! Changing times and all that.

There were obviously some colonials who were kinder than others. Many, particularly in the Happy Valley in Kenya, regarded the natives as very inferior to them and would often hit their servants - never mind just verbally insult them.
