Question for mac brothers...

I when got mine I transfered all my images over from my pc into folders on my mac.

The iPhoto software added everything into its library and listed it all in events just as the folders were.

I just want to know can I now delete the folders that I have the original photos in? Does iPhoto actually copy all the files of is it just a fancy way of viewing them?

I wonder because I think I am using double the memory for no reason?

It depends on how you have iPhoto preferences set up. Look at the Advanced settings: do you have "Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when adding to library" selected. If you haven?t then you cannot delete the original pictures.

Also, check in your home folder (the one with the picture of the house on it). Look in the Pictures folder and you should find an iPhoto folder there. In that folder you should find other folders with thumbnails of your pictures, and folders with either the full-size pictures, or Aliases of the pictures (the icon will have an arrow on its left side). If you have Aliases, then you cannot delete the original pictures.

Check everything very carefully before deleting anything. An Alias icon only points to the original picture, it is not the actual picture itself. If you click on an Alias icon it will open the original full-size picture; if the original picture is not there, then clicking an Alias icon will not produce anything.

You bet I did, I've got my first lesson on Monday on Final Cut Express. In the old days tuition would cost about ?50 per hour so it's a bargain!

I'm going to upgrade the memory to 4 gb.

Normally, iPhoto will copy the files into the library, so it is probably safe to delete the folder - make sure you have a backup before doing so.

The current iPhoto makes the library appear as a single file in your photos folder - to view the contents right click and choose "show package contents". This will open a new Finder window - look in the Data folder for the photos. They should be arranged by year and date. DON'T change anything though - this will mess up the library.

Ah cool guys thanks for the tips!

I went in the preferences and set it to copy items to iphoto.

I was considering fobbin off the iphoto application completely and sticking with the old folders, preview, and open and edit everthing in photoshop! (which is bit long and annoying)

But now I guess I can do the basic stuff with iphoto now and import everything into the iphoto library and get rid of the folders that i transferred from the pc!

Thanks guys! Damn I wish I had access to a apple store sometimes!! grr!!

Enjoy your lesson Jim!
