They cause mood swings but only because of the hormones but they don't cause psychological problems as steroids aren't mind altering drugs. Its most likely Benoit was suffering from some serious psyhcological issues prior to the incident. There's no way gear caused this,

Considering how everyone has always praised Benoit as being a loving family man and a dear friend its terrifying to think that even the best of us can snap to this extreme. My heart really goes out to his and Womans family this is a real tragedy.
