Quite right. Yes, there is much more evidence this time and they may well be right. But, I was just making the point that sometimes things that can be ' absolutely certain ' just never happen. Anyone old enough to remember the mid eighties will remember how certain a nuclear war was. The doomsday clock was always at 2 seconds to midnight and it was generally agreed that the Russians and the Yanks were going to get the thing over and done with before 2000.

Steve 56, is there a particular issue of TV Times from 1976 you're after ? Just in case I happen to come across some in my travels I might be able to help. I'm talking about the Aussie versions you understand.

Global warming is real and you'd better get your head round it fast.
Taxation is only one way to fight it and there are many things that can be done to avoid total fucking disaster. It only remains to be seen if we, as a race, can get it together to solve this problem.

Wether you believe in the Global Warming scenario or not we all want to breathe fresh air, so cutting pollution is in everyones interest but all a green tax would do is raise more revenue for this goverment to waste on their pet schemes and probably wouldnt make much difference to pollution levels.

The planet is getting hotter at the moment without a doubt. There is a consensus of opinion on this. Whether it is caused by carbon dioxide I am not certain. We breathe out carbon dioxide as do all the animals on the planet and the plants "inhale." Records only go back a few centuries and are irrelevant in the lifespan of the Earth. However we do know from fossils and so on that there was an iceage as well as intensely hot periods before the industrial revolution.

What I do know is that capitalism runs on oil and that oil is running out. Those that have it on their territories are putting up the price. Therefore capitalism needs alternative energy rapidly if it is going to survive! We know that they need everyone to believe in global warming and to go easy on the remaining stocks while they switch to new sources of renewable energy. That is all I am saying because I am not a scientist.

I think the point of a green tax is not to raise revenue per se, but to reduce consumption by making an activity more expensive. It has been shown that a small increase in the cost of some less than healthy activies ( such as smoking, alcohol etc) does have a marked effect in reducing that activity. Unfortunately that often means those less able to afford it loose out.

As for cheap flights?................Well I'm all for them. Any transport that provides transit for the masses should pay less tax per passenger than smaller private aircraft.

I love people who say they'd never use public transport..............apparently they love their car. I'd like to see them loving their car if the tubes & buses ceased for a few months. They'd probably have to get up 5 hours earlier to get to work.

Mass transit, and more efficient fuel/engines is the only way forward.

The Earth's temperature swings between bouts of extreme cold & heat every so often due to Solar variances, variations in the Earth's orbit, and tilt on it's axis. Upon Earth there's CO2 and Oxygen variance which have effects too.

However during the last 150 years, the Earth's temperature is rising around 400% faster than at any other time since life began.

Since the industrial revolution happened around 150 years ago, I don't think it's coincidence.
