[qoute]But that's the whole point isn't it? In politically correct modern parlance, the definitions of 'respect' and 'tolerance' have become blurred to the point that to all intents and purposes, they now often refer to the same thing.
Respect should be earned.
They don't mean that the rest of society should "tolerate" these groups, their traditions and their beliefs in the sense of "grudgingly put up with".
I can't know what they mean. I have to take them for what I think tolerance means.
You yourself have preached "tolerance" towards gays (over the question of gay marriage for example), and I'm sure that the Slater message there is "because they're just like us / all the gays I've known have been top blokes / so what if they want to suck each others' cocks, what does it matter etc. etc."
Am I right?
Yes..........basically.
It's not "bunch of fucking pooftahs, I can't fucking stand the perverted bastards but I suppose I've just got to grin and fucking bear it" (as in "tolerate" it).
No Sam. When you come on here and preach "tolerance", you mean "respect". Or at very least "acceptance". And you know you do.
Oh, you're telling me what I think now, Flat_Eric? How very helpful of you. While you're at it, I'm having a late lunch today and have not decided if I should have mint sauce with my lamb yet. Can you let me know before 2pm. Thanks.
Sarcasm over. No, when I encourage people to tolerate homosexuality I'm in no way saying you have to like them. Grin and bear till your heart's content. What I'm saying -usually on here- is that do not discriminate against them based on their sexuality. Dislike them all you want but do not infringe on what they can and cannot do if it's of no consequence to anyone else. And, furthermore, if you're going to spout your homophobia then expect to be argued and ridiculed about it. If you do not want an argument about, or mocked because of, your beliefs, do not express them on a public forum.
In any case we're just going round the houses now and I can't see the fucking point any more to be honest. You (as always) are determined to have "the last word".
Not always - but often! Usually it's about repeating something that's been ignored, or misunderstood. Other times it's explaining something I'd not thought of or a retort to the previous post........sometimes it's just to take the piss. But, hey........who's perfect?
I'm simply trying to point out (again) that Ken's point was just that it's perfectly possible to respect an idea, a belief or a theory without necessarily going along with it yourself. And the funny thing is, you even admit that it's possible!
But I never said otherwise. You thought that up all by yourself just because I was arguing with Mr. Shabbythinking. And, as you say, I have already agreed that it is possible, which leads to the obvious question: If I'd already agreed with you on this why feel the need to repeat the point?
Oh, and thank you for the admission you were completely wrong about my respect for Islam. Very gentlemanly of you.

I've changed my mind on the edit function. I believe it would only encourage abuse and threats late at night that will be deleted or edited before the mods check-in.
Yes the mods would still have a record of deleted and edited posts but it just saves all the hassle.
You see.....I'm not so stubborn after all!

No Sam ... just very tedious.

Indeed you have. The rest of your ramblings above is basically just hot air.

Re: Greedy Bishops?
By agreeing it is possible to respect a belief you yourself do not agree with in no way contradicts any point I've made. Like I've said already, it is possible but not necessary.
It is you that's had to repeat the same point twice, on something which we agree on. That, my friend, is tediousness and 'hot air'.
As with Mr. Shabby, you've resorted to arguing me, not the points.

Whatever Sam. I'm off out now to watch some grass grow. Far more interesting.
Have a good one, and enjoy the roast lamb.
