Fry said that if the dog was named 'Nigger' the film would bomb in the states ..so to speak! Think they will be calling him Digger. Also 'Nigger' was the Code Word for a successful result too in the original.

I had a dog who was an exact replica of "Nigger" in the Dambusters, a faithfull, Black Labrador. She sadly died a few years ago at the age of 16. Anyway, I can't see why they shouldn't rename the Labrador in the Dambusters for a modern version, the pooch's name isn't integral to the plot, or the outcome of the raid. It would cause unnecessary upset to some and divert attention away from the point of the film if they continued called it "Nigger".
Here are some suggestions for a new name:
Cuddles
Growler
Winston (Obviously!)
and here are some more!

I dont think 'coloured people' is a bad term. In America the nicest term used for black people is 'African American', what should the white folk of Britain do then? I think 'African Brit' could be a term used here for black people. No one says that though, so 'coloured people' seems reasonable. Every race has to have a term.
When you say black people were treated like shit back then, you have to remember that it was not a mass media age, most people didn't have TV's in the 1950's (and those who did wouldn't have had anything like the coverage of world affairs you get now), people were also not very well educated.
Imagine a sceneraion like that, then vast numbers of people of a differnt colour arrive in your neigbourhood - when you had never seen anyone other than people of your own colour before. It would freak anyone out. I bet people in Africa were just as freaked out when they first saw white people.
If you look at how badly mass immigation was handled in the 1950s, by the MacMillan Government and others, where we ended up with about 12 times as many people as we hoped, then the local population are bound to freak out. I remember reading that the influx was so huge that people had the same neighbours and would see the same people walking down the street in Britain as they did in their country of origin.

Stephen Fry has said that the film would never be anything other than controversial in the USA if they hadn't changed the dog's name to 'Digger'. They are ultra-PC over there and there are legions of people who make a very good living in America out of telling the public how racist they are, and those people would have a field-day.
