The claim about Auschwitz being too far for Allied bombers to reach was made by Lord Avon (Sir Anthony Eden) in a tv documentary in the early 70's. It may have been the World at War. Nevertheless I had forgotten about the I.G.Farben factory and you are right.

One of the reasons they did'nt bomb Auswitz, I read somewhere that if we had flattened the hell-hole, the Germans would have realised that we had broken the Enigma Codes. It boiled down to simple semantics in the end, as Winston Churchill said, we have to win the war by any means neccesary.
By which I think he meant any decision how ever dirty and nasty would be made to destroy the Nazi regime.
Ol' Winston made a few cock-ups in his life-time, but in tackling Hitler and his bunch of murderous thugs, he was absolutely spot on.
The sign of a truly great leader is having to make awful decisions and having to live with them, and I also think the Allies really did'nt realise or want to realise the true extent of what the Nazis were up to.
