I disagree it was linked with communism. The philosphy was one of equality and modesty, therefore buildings were built with small functional, and identical in mind no frills, cost effective. Of course this was also done to the working classes in U.K too to some extent, but in communists states it was all prevelent, at the expense of anything else. You only have to go to Russia and see breathtaking examples of architecture built in the tsarist era such as the winter retreat at Leningrad, or the kremlin, then take a gander at the estates and office blocks built in the communist era. Ditto for most European countries, Czech republic, Poland, Hungary, where beautiful middle age architecture contrast so sharply and obviously with the ugly communist brick built eyeysores. Most potently go to Germany and see the difference between East and West, the only possible reason being the seperate political sytems that existed there from 1945-90. Sorry but communism doesn;t produce luxurious housing or opulents displays of wealth for the very fact it's totally opposed to it's ideology.
