what I failed to convey clear enough was that my amusement stemmed from 2 facts:
1.Lizard posts as much cobblers as S56 (although with wit and intelligence)
2.Woodgnome ALWAYS makes sensible posts, thus I at once knew cobbler
had to have two meanings - since I never would suspect Woodgnome to
make a post just to state the obvious (i.e "Steve's talking cobblers")
I assume Lizard made his post to mock Woodgnome of doing just that.
I'm more of a reader than contributor to the board.Having mostly school knowledge of english and just occasionally visiting England, it's great to read a board with so much rich, living language.
I feel I know more english from reading this board but then I occasionally write something,I see I am prone to write in a way that is begging to be misunderstood.
People here generally write in very different styles, that's something I appreciate: all from the undecipherable cobblers of Steve56 to Lizards antics to JJs civilised lectures.
I have learned some english from all of you [- but I didn't learn punctuation from Steve56
] and that's why I keep coming back to this forum.

Don't put yourself down Steve . Iron bars do not make a cage , nor certificates intelligence . Staying until you are 15 seems to be an achievment in the present education "system".

Steve, let me just say that I don't judge you less or more by the amount of schooling you have recieved.
Character is more important than diplomas and it can only be gained in the school of life.
Your posts is a constant source of amusement and I like to read the responses it drums up.
But at times it can be hard to understand the meaning, the sole reason being lack of punctuation(well, the literal meaning at least).
Lack of or wrong use of punctuation both make a text harder to understand and change the meaning of it.
You may have heard the story of the judge in the Old West who telegraphed ahead of his arrival in a small western town.
A man awaited a trial and risked being hanged.
The judge was late and sent a telegram : "kill him not, wait till I come"
The telegraph operator misplaced a comma and made it into :
"kill him,not wait till I come"
And the man lost his neck...
(the first urban myth ?)
Cheers Rob.

What about going overseas and teach, like Thailand maybe?
I recently got mail from a friend of mine who sold his car and put his posessions in storage to travel to Thailand for an undecided stretch of time. He's just begun a six week pedagogic course enabling him to apply for jobs as a teacher.
He's unlikely to be paid much but he lives absurdly cheap at the moment.
He rents a decent apartment for 80 pounds and reckons he use about 2
pounds a day for meals. He's had the time of his life the past month, going up and down the country photographing wildlife and the rest of the time diving in waters to clear and too rich of life to be believed.
Any educated person with a good command of english should have small trouble finding a teaching job in the east. The growth of internet has made english so dominant that anybody want or need it.
In India the business of call-centres handling customer care for american companies, have completely outcompeted their american counterparts.
As a result of this there excists a huge demand for english teachers employed purely for honing the skills of indian workers to speak without a trace of accent.
American customers calling from lets say Texas gets to speak with an indian representative speaking perfect texan lingo;never realising their calls have been redirected by satellite from USA to India to an employer assigned to handling calls from Texas. This is something I have from an episode of 60 minutes.

To qualify even in the all-time top ten, let's see how he'd do in a BAR or a Williams. Bubbles the Chimp could win the title driving for Ferrari, in the current 'competition'.
And let's not forget the times he's put other drivers at severe risk through his arrogance, selfishness and/or incompetence.
Great?
Certainly.
In his own eyes............
