Gentle ribbing and banter is fine if it's not close to the truth. I mean, if you call me a 'bender', and I know I'm straight, we have a good old chuckle about it. Now, if you call me a 'bender' and I secretly am one, but trying to hide it from friends and family, then I might get angry and say you're slandering me. Common sense isn't it?

Can we assume from this that banter is acceptable unless it either becomes detrimental to the subject it's aimed at, or it becomes too close to the real truth for comfort?

Now, we know that 'hiwatt' has stated that he is posting on behalf of Bluebird, and Paul Chaplin/whoever, and we know that he/she has got a little hot under the collar over some remarks. Considering our conclusions in the previous paragraph, it's either because these remarks are untrue, but detrimental to Bluebird/Paul, or close to truths that he doesn't want revealed.

Now, if we are assuming there are no other reasons that Bluebird/Paul may get upset/angry/defensive, then we just have two possibilities. If you know Paul personally, then you can throw probability into the mix as to which of the two possibilities is the cause for his anger/upset/defensiveness. If you do not know Paul personally then you have to treat each possibility equally.

It is then safe to assume that the likelihood of the banter being untrue, but detrimental to Bluebird/Paul is equal to the likelihood of the banter being true. It's 50/50.

Now, when parting with your cash, just remember it's 50/50 (unless you can think of another reason for his anger/upset/defensiveness, or he's not really angry/upset/defensive about said banter, to which we're all ok to carry on; and his threats of court action were just retortive banter).

It's your money people.

Edit: I have just thought of a third possible reason and that is that both the previous two possibilities are true, together. So, it's either untrue but detrimental to Bluebird/Paul, a truth/s he doesn't want revealed, or true and detrimental to Bluebird/Paul.

So now we have a 33.3% chance that it is untrue, but detrimental to Bluebird/Paul and a 66.6% chance of it being true (fear of banter being detrimental to Bluebird/Paul or not).

Remember that I'm not stating facts, or accusations, I'm just talking about possibilities and working out the probability of each assumed possibility (based on the fact that you don't know Paul personally; and most customers would not know Paul personally). Each forumite is free to make up their own mind and conclude that my assumed possibilities are inaccurate.
