There is an awful lot of snobbery around about shooting progressive at 24fps because it borrows more from the way film is shot. As film is pretty much redundant there is no need to shoot as though you were making a film. There is also a lot of negativity around about shooting interlaced. If the cinema buffs knew their stuff then they would know that that too is borrowed from film. I had a long long discussion with somebody who could not understand that shooting people in a room or studio somewhere could not be improved upon by racking up the technology. Shooting HD actually requires more care with makeup, sets and costumes as it can start to expose defects rather than enhancing things. The lenses on most video cameras over the ?3K mark are perfectly adequate for shooting most forms of TV, even films because you can shoot creatively. Given that you can pretty much shoot a feature film on not very expensive kit, porn producers have not started shooting as though they are making a form of entertainment. It is still a grubby stag-movie in most cases, nothing has changed since the 1970s, no plot, no script, no acting, just the same bacon-slicer product. The other thing I have encountered is the tight-fistedness of some producers. One I was talking to expected to use a location for two hours, a domestic setting requiring some preparation and termed what was a ?5 per hour price increase as 'expensive.'

I have to say you are wrong in your observation Locationsfinder...Ive covered a few producers who have upped their game to embrace DSLR including Benson Media on this post. KendoFilms, Suburban Amateurs and most stills photographers, Viv Thomas, Killergram. In fact a whole slew of producers I believe also, most mid range producers (a group I class myself in) are shooting some sort of HD, XDCam, HDV etc

I dont think a discussion on this is snobbery on my part but merely a response to what is said on this thread.

I can only assume the people you are referring to are those making use of the new technology available to them. Could these people be the same ones that let models down by booking shoots that they fail to honour, undercut, underpay or plain dont pay the models what was agreed and upset the fragile balance of what was an honourable business transaction for years between models and producers until the Adult Work born producers all but levelled the playing field to one of confusion and disarray that we see all around us today?

Surely the grubby stag movie you describe is mostly produced by the crowd who fool themselves that they are producers but really in it for a shag to make their money back by selling it on Adult Work PS: Not knocking AdultWork but it is what it is

In summation I would say there was a lot of good quality product being made more than any time but in ratio to the people coming into the business its really all about seperating the wheat from the chaff

The thing I respect about DSLR film making is that you are forced to respect the disciplines of creating a decent product because its not a format that works well for gonzo at all

Whats the point of investing in that equipment and using standard crap lenses. Using zooms and primes requires more hands on ability than the point and shoot camcorder

Wow all this technical talk... and there was me thinking we were all just pornographers !

I shoot with a fairly decent camera Sony HDV Z5E I think it's called... see I am not techie... It has a really cool feature on it, and that's when I look down the lense (well the display screen) the lense is automatically attracted to naked women (especially wet pussy)

Yes that's right people I am a Man With A Cam... #click !

I enter this debate rather late, and since I direct and produce primarily on
Mainland Europe, I doubt whether you need my help Katie, though if you
decide to shoot at all in Budapest or Prague then I`d be delighted to help....
But I agree with what you say one eyed-jack.....I mainly use a variety of HD
cameras since no client seems to want anything less these days, but I have
experimented with the lush look of DSLR and agree its best suited to stylish
material, since its rather the antithesis of reality gonzo.....it also takes much
longer to shoot (or it did for us). Ironically, I discussed a site using this
style with a European web company, but their production manager, steeped
in a decade of fast hand-held gonzo, could not get his head around the
concept. DSLR looks great on met-art but classic HD seems to be the name
of the porn game.

Apparently not it seems. The evidence of that is in this thread alone. Pornographers are not made equal but judged equally as one and the same !happy!
