Models have the right to decide what rates they are to charge for their levels, just the same as solicitors, plumbers and electricians etc, have.
I always describe the contents of a proposed shoot to a model, and ask her what is her rate to cover that level.
The model decides her rate: I decide whether to accept that rate or not.
And haggling at the shoot is not advisable, it can be painful.

Exactly Toliver.
The alternative though and just as equally correct is if the photographer/producer has a budget for the shoot and lets the model know the fee he's offering (within the correct ballpark for the levels she'd be required to work to of course otherwise that is "extracting the wee wee"), the model can the decide whether to accept or not.

Does the rate offered to a model also include a number of other factors such as how much product the producer thinks they will shift.
In main stream movies, a Hollywood A List can command millions due to their fan base but a newbie can't.
I would think a similar thing happens in porn. A girl who's new and a size 8 / 10 may be offered more than someone who's not a size 8 / 10.
I've tried to organise a few shoots and offered the girls a reasonable amount but have been let down a few times : we've talking a couple of hundred not ?100 and print.
My only downfall is I am very fussy...
Just my thoughts.

Re: what's with these low rates?
Every model new or well known should be paid the same rate if they are doing the same work, a producer who has a set budget will offer what he/she thinks they can be paid & its up to the model to say a polite no if she/he don't agree.
All this arguing about who pays what etc don't make any difference & people will pay & work for above or less like its always been.
The term "Amateur" is a lose one in the industry as big companies are classed as Pro whereas the little part time people would call themselves Amateur even though both earn money, as we all know the bigger companies have more outlets to earn more & its standard they pay what they do even though several are now offering rates to match the amateurs because they face hardtimes.
There is another recession starting so we expect to see pay reduced by most of the producers other the next couple of years as they themselves struggle to survive, if some don't like the pay others will work for it & thats fact so its up to models & producers to work together & for models to understand some of these guys can't compete with their larger counterparts.
We advise any models now to make their own movies as well as work for others as this industry will suffer badly from the recession & having films as a backup for AW / clips for sale on rainy days is very important.

Re: what's with these low rates?
Thats well said Kim and something I am going to have consider if things get worse at the moment I am paying the going rate but if models are excepting less for others and I pay the same as I am now I fear I will run into the ground if I don't adapt even if that means offering less. Its something I have thought about for a while but I have always prided myself on paying the higher rate, admiringly I wouldn't be able to if I was doing so so but still. My rates have been all over the place in this tax year. Paying the most I ever paid for some but of course I went seeking them out so I guess I had to if I thought they were worth it
