A bit of a shame but as expected.

I just wanted Scotland to give the Westminster elite a good kicking. It could have woken the rest of us up to do the same.

Still, when nearly half the population of a country vote for independence, even this no vote is just delaying the inevitable. It will happen.

I'm pleased the 'no' lot won and that our UK will remain. Further powers are bound to be devolved down to the Scots now, it will be interesting to see what they are and what it will all mean. I just hope Scots will no longer be able to vote on English affairs in future.

Not necessarily. It depends what happens in the meantime. You could argue that the SNP only got close because of the conjuction of dreadful recession, right wing Tory government backed by the Lib Dems who you supported going into coalition and the slickest political operator of a generation, Alex Salmond.

The factors that come in to play next time around are:

1. the Westminster government reluctance to provide another independence vote in a generation. They only gave a referendum this time because they thought there was no chance of a Yes vote.
2. The apparent SNP acceptance of this. You cannot have two year referendum campaigns every 10 years. It would be a complete nonsense.
3. Alex Salmond's political and tactical naus will not be available.
4. It is likely that the finite resource of Scottish oil will be that much nearer running out so the whole economic basis for independence would be undercut.
5. As Salmond himself said it is a once in a lifetime opportunity and it has gone.

Sorry Sam but that was it. No more. Take out the anti English brigades in Glasgow and Dundee and the vote was a resounding no. Without the pound and the power of the Bank of England, BP, Glaxo, Vodafone etc you would have gone down faster than a pint of Tennents on a hot day. You've had your cake and decided you didn't like the taste.

Ah.......so the Yes voters were just 'anti-English'. Don't be silly, Arg. They wanted to have control of their own future which is, if you look around the world, a pretty normal wish to have. Whether it would be the best option right now is a debate worth having, but to just dismiss one side as nasty bigots is just as bad as people who say criticising Islam is somehow racist.

And my questions to you again, are:

1. What was all that shit about London in your last reply to me?

2. Why don't you want Scots to get independence if they wanted it?


As an Englishman, I'm not that fussed. It just would have been nice to see a whole nation tell the Westminster elite where to shove it. Thatcher started it with completely destroying whole communities and Labour finished it with their turning away from the working class and taking them for granted. Those two things brought the United Kingdom within a 6% swing of breaking up. But it wasn't to be.

I just hope, as a Yorkshireman, we get more powers to make decisions and policies that benefit and suit the local regions rather than just a capital city 300 miles away. I believe we would be more likely to get this after a Yes vote. Let's see how it pans out.
