"Don't be such a moron.."
You seem to have developed an unfortunate habit of resorting to insults when you are losing an argument. Or even when
"Assuming someone has a garden 162 feet long,
Well it could be less than 162 feet or even more. I don't have a hang-up about it being exactly 162 feet.
"presumably they would only invite people known to them to this hypothetical barbecue or do they let all and sundry into their house. Or would the abductor break down the front door? The apartment door was not broken down."
This has nothing at all to do with the point being made. The point you made was that the McCanns left their children alone. It is exactly the same here.
"That is such a pathetic point, it's not even worth answering".
Well, you insisted that the McCanns should have been prosecuted by Social Services. Their "offence" according to you was committed in Portugal where different laws apply. Therefore using your logic, the thing to do surely would be to get the EU to introduce a general law applying to all EU countries which lays down the distance in metres from a house/apartment/holiday apartment you may be whilst your kids sleep to avoid prosecution.

Re: Gentleman
"50 metres as the crow flys? Slightly different from 50 metres as a person can see/hear and have any idea of what's happening in that area."
Where have I said that the McCanns could see or hear what was going on in their kids' bedroom? I have not. What I have said is that they were nearby so could check regularly on them which apparently they did.
Nor would I say that parents having a barbecue at the end of their garden with friends, loud music, drink etc. would be able to hear what was going on in their kids' bedroom overlooking the road.
Feel free to knock down arguments I have not made, but they have nothing to do with my posts in this thread.

Essex Lad
"How naive can you be? Very it would seem in your case."
Once again, an insult with no content. You are na?ve. Oh no, I'm not. Audience "Oh yes, you are" etc etc etc.
"What are you talking about? A kid did not have an accident. A kid was abducted. It is not the same."
It would appear you have missed the point. In the same way many meteorites miss the earth.
Gentleman suggested that the "chattering classes" views would have been different and more critical of the McCanns if one of their kids had had an accident rather than being abducted. I disagreed and explained why- hence my reference to accidents.
At this juncture I could say stop being a moron, Essex Lad, as you said to me elsewhere in this thread. However, I am far too polite for that.
Anyway, since you seem perfectly capable of making a fool of yourself , there seems little point.

Re: Essex Lad
As you know perfectly well in the thread about 29 minute jury deliberation you started insulting all and sundry e.g.
"I don't know how many times I have to say it before it sinks through your thick skulls " and "if you cannot understand that simple (and I keeping it simple especially for you, Johnson) idea, then you are not as bright as you seem to think you are."
And that for an argument that I showed was clearly nonsense and which you were totally unable to respond to. So I decided to insult you with "piss off" because ignorance and bad manners should not be rewarded
You obviously have a tendency to totally lose your rag when you are coming off badly in an argument.
Here in this thread you started insulting William immediately without any provocation e.g. "I'll say that again in case it doesn't sink in"
Everybody seems a moron apart from you.

Re: William
My first response was to jump on the key board and type off a reply but I didnt - I took stock and I thought about the reply that came back....
1. They left their kids alone on bed - something that they probably did before. People do, even if its down stairs watching the telly you are still leaving the kids upstairs, alone, yes you may be a few meters away instead of a few tens of meters away.
2. In case you dont get it someone came in and took that kid - some bad bastard some evil bastard took that kid and no one knows where the kid is now alive or dead. The mcanns didnt.
3. you try to make it a class issue - that because they were rich they were somehow to blame. Ill say it again someone came in and took that kid did you hear that ? what would the difference have been if they had been down stairs or sleeping in the bedroom next door ? would that have made it okay would that have absolved them ? again its like you want to blame the mcanns for this ? yep. Ill say it again someone came in and stole that little girl - the mcanns didnt.
4. you seem to believe that there would be as difference across the classes ? do you really ? what about the crap they did with the maccanns the time they wasted and the balls up of the investigation that went on in the initial aftermath - they blamed the macanns said it was them - checked the car and all sorts to try and cover up the fact that someone came in and took thast little girl.
5. the locals were terrified that it would impact their economy that somehow it would scare of the middle classes.....
6. its one hell of a situation but you still want to place the blame at the maccans.... why?

Read this. True
I'm sure the McCann's regret that night. I sure they beat themselves up about going for a meal.
But as this link shows it does not seem to matter if kids are home alone or not. If some sick bastard wants to take a chance they will

William,i have never met the MCcanns,i dont have a clue if they are nice people or complete cunts. All i know is,and it doesn't take a genius to figure out,IF IT HAD BEEN A SINGLE MUM LIVING IN BRIXTON IN A COUNCIL FLAT WHO HAD DONE THE EXACT SAME THINGS THAT THE MCCANNS HAD THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN STRUNG UP BY THE TABLOIDS. This is a fact.

No this isn't a fact. And it is no more a fact because you use CAPS.
First you give the impression that the McCanns have been treated by the British press with kid gloves when you would have expected them to have been "strung up by the tabloids".
In fact many of the tabloids, particularly the Express Group, hounded and vilified the McCanns resulting in one of the biggest awards for libel damages seen.
Secondly, you do not seem to be familiar with cases like that of April Jones. April was let out to play unsupervised by her mother Coral Jones in Machynlleth in mid-Wales. April was abducted and murdered by Mark Bridger.
Coral Jones lived on a council estate, Bryn-y-Gog in Machynlleth, As far as I know, throughout the case, Coral and the rest of the family received nothing but support from the tabloids.

Re: Number 6
Well said David....Well said
The Macanns were indeed vilified by the papers at the time - they had the intellignce and support to fight it and maybe your average joe in a sink estate wouldnt have been able to do so...
Some of the comments on here were indeed an eye opener - left me thinking there are a few that like to run the 'rich' down or take pop shots at a couple that have gone through and are still probably going through a hellish time.
