Thought I would clarify my response to your post which included this from you

Although you obviously do not state it, the use of "we" in the above suggests that the "we" i.e. you and the nation are looking at this stand-off with a what on earth is going on viewpoint. And the reason for this reaction is that gypsies are hated in hungary and "we" , again, call a spade a spade and act accordingly.

So given it is my understanding that attacks on Romanies are increasing in Hungary after a long history of abuse, that is why I posted using the word "imply"

Now if I have inferred the above incorrectly and you are against the increase in attacks in Hungary that have been taking place and the persecution of Romanies, obviously I have got it wrong and don't have any problem with saying that I got the wrong end of the stick.

The facts are that this isn't a racist issue not sure how they are perceived in ireland but this is simply an planning issue ,they built something which they shouldn't have,anyone who says its because they are irish is desperate!

You are perfectly right that a lot of travellers will set up shop as it were and then try for retrospective planning permission.

Having said that gypsies are viewed as a racial group and have been abused and attacked for this for many decades, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe.

It used to be a reguirement for local authorities to provide sites for travellers up to 1994 when that rule was dispensed with . As a result the number of sites has declined substantially.

A Council of Racial Equality report suggested that travellers got turned down for planning permission much, much more regularly than Joe Public. Something like 90% of traveller applications turned down as opposed to 20% of Joe Public.

As a result of a lack of council sites and a feeling that they have no chance of getting planning permission anyway, this seems to have resulted in the scenario where gypsies buy the land, move in and then apply for retrospective planning permission like Dale Farm.

I am no particular supporter of gypsies and they do themselves no favours in lots of cases by their behaviour, but I dont think it is necessarily quite as straightforward as stating "this is a simply a planning issue". Otherwise this problem will keep on repeating itself and councils will carry on getting lumbered with huge bills like Basildon Council seem to have done.

what is the difference between a gypsy and an irish traveller,if basildon council is racist they wouldn't have been given permission to buy the land anyway,i don't know which buildings are legal or not but as regards to planning maybe their plans are inadequate given current building regulations (i know about this) and its pretty strict when it comes to new build homes with energy efficiency etc every new job has some new way of saving water or electricity i don't know just a thought.

I'm not saying that Basildon Council is racist, though, lets face it very few people want travellers living close to their house.

With regard to buying land, a council cannot intervene. If someone wants to sell land they own, the Council can have no say over who they sell it to. What the council can control is whether planning permission to build houses on it is given or not.

What I am saying is that there has to be a better way of dealing with it than this. ?18 million cost to the council to deal with this. For that they could probably build a large number of 3 bedroom semi-detached houses on brown field sites they own.

The dale Farm piss takers are Irish tinkers. Ethnically they are the same as any Irish and many British people. True Romany gypsies have dark complexions, as they originally came from India. I saw a few gypsies the last time I was in Hungary, and it was very easy to tell them apart from the Magyars.
