Steve Howe? I'd hardly consider him to be underrated, how often did he win the Melody Maker poll?

George Harrison was very underrated as a guitarist. He is mostly remembered for being a Beatle or ex-Beatle. Rarely do people remember him as a guitarist - and bloody good he was too.

Since when was Ritchie Blackmore (you managed to spell both of his names incorrectly) underrated?

In the 1970s, he was consistently voted the world's best player, in the rock papers. He continues to be held in very high regard, especially by those in the business.

Excellent choice, Laralatex - Leslie West is one of the true greats. You can see some very rare videos of him, at his best, at the link below.

I would also add for consideration Ariel Bender (real name: Luther Grosvenor) of Mott The Hoople, who, like West, was able to coax some extraordinary tones from a Les Paul Junior. Indeed, his vibrato was quite remarkable, perhaps even more refined than that of West.

Some excellent names there Steve. A couple more 70's guitarists I'd say were underrated - although highly respected as session musicians - Mick Ronson and Snowy White.
