It's happened for years. The Bay City Rollers were another one. At least it's upfront and honest this way.
The point is, gives the contestant the chance to live the dream and do something they'd normally find impossible to do and if they're talented enough (which I believe Leona Lewis is) then they can ditch the record company after a year and get a new deal.
If they're not talented enough, then they can go back to obscurity and disappear after having the best year of their life.
If someone asked you if you wanted to be a star for a year, have a laugh, make a few bob, and disappear would you knock them back?
And it does make for entertaining telly.

In the media I would say Jeremy Kyle (po faced toss monger), in my personnel life I would say my boss who is dropping our wage dramatically and cutting back on OT and expecting the same enthusiasm and work load to be carried out.

The Queen and any member of the Royal Family. I'd send them all to live out the rest of their lives in exile given half the chance - maybe with that nice bloke Desmond Tutu in South Africa. I'd give them ?300 allowance a week each for board and lodgings, the rest of their fortunes would be confiscated by the state, seeing they thieved it in the first place.
