A human being can turn to evil but cannot be born evil. It is part of the nature of all conscienceness. Once under its grip it cannot be controlled only fought against. Of course thankfully it can be defeated too.

A person who commits sadistic torture and agonising murders for perverse reasons cannot be in control only under control. The same applies to the person who orders others to commit such attrocities. Evil is a very powerful force and a dictator of many.

I suppose, in a way, we are all capable of doing evil. Whether we are aware we're committing something awful is a different matter.

There's an old saying about not listening to the voices in your head which say doing such-and-such would be a good idea; they are not your friend. For instance, some poor Irish tourist is in hospital with severe spinal injuries because some drunken twat in Edinburgh thought it would be a good idea to drop a traffic cone from a high bridge on to the road below. A lot of "evil" crimes start by listening to such mental suggestions.

For true evil, you usually have to go to those with major power. Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Amin, Duvalier etc all fit the profile. You commit so many crimes in order to gain power that after a while the killing becomes a matter of just numbers.

Hindley was apparently a nice, sweet girl who loved children and animals and wouldn't hurt anyone. Then she met Brady, who was an out-and-out bad 'un (like Charlie Manson, he got off on having so much power over people and making them do awful things). Brady had read Mein Kampf, and was very much into the murders and tortures carried out by the SS. Turn your girlfriend (and to a lesser extent her brother-in-law) into a doormat, and let your imagination run wild.

To the public, though, Hindley would always appear the villain of the piece, because she was a woman. We seem able to tolerate the Bradys and Blacks and Sutcliffes of this world, none of who seemed to be subjected to the public vilification that Myra was.

True evil today involves flying aircraft into buildings, sending young people to be martyrs by blowing innocents to kingdom come; taking people randomly off the streets of Baghdad and torturing and murdering them; attacking woman seeking water for their families and raping them, then scarring them so their husbands will know what has happened.

Evil, like good, has many faces, and we may like to think we're immune to it. But who knows what we are capable of, given a different set of circumstances?

Well if you read the Old Testament God kills 371,186 people directly and orders another 1,862,265 people murdered, allows slavery, including selling your own daughter as a sex slave, child abuse and bashing babies against rocks.

So perhaps religious ideology plays a part in the nature of evil. And then of course there are the political ideologies of Das Kapital, Mein Kampf, The Little Red Book - these have all played some part in the waste of millions of lives.

It might not be man that is evil but ideas.

Don't take this the wrong way - I missed a fucking word out and the word was "mans" as in mans ideas.

But of course that is blindly obvious to all but a pedantic.........

But you are right my last post was not characterized by repetition and excessive wordiness. Thank you for pointing that out.
