This was nothing like a "minor indiscretion". This pope, like so many before him, is a cunt. Hope I haven't offended any catholics.

I agree he knew exactly what he was saying and smotthed things over by making the political move as an apology.

Bollocks! This is the sort of two faced shit I expected and one of the reasons why their will never be peace amongst men in any form when you get the most symbolic man of the christian world saying shit like that in such sensitive times.

The pope aint stupid so why even go there in the first place. maybe you are right Alice In Blunderland...maybe there are chrisitan fanatics who would like nothing better to have another holy crusade like the muslims want their jihad.

maybe we should put all those pent up people on an island somewhere in the South Pacific and let them get on with it until they run out of steam and say: damn that was really silly...What we fighting for again? The basis for your arguments started two millineums ago ithink we have moved on and need to get on with more pressing concerns such as aids and cancer research and starvation and poverty and developing the third world instead of getting in the way of progress which this seems to be doing.

You are right that the Pope is right wing, Keith. However I cannot agree that membership of the Hitler Youth over 60 years ago should disqualify him from the papacy now.

It is true the Christians can claim their fair share of historical horrors. But I also agree with a point made earlier that they have evolved in certain ways more than some other monotheistic cults, especially regarding their persecution of other worship. This is mainly due to forced proximity to science and social progress in the West over a very long period rather than to any real change in their viewpoint. The attempt to point this out could have been stated more diplomatically, but then again maybe not. More rational people are left to deal with the daily outbursts of focused blind faith instilled from birth. Apparently freedom of thought is an ability not as self-evident and universal as previously believed.

It seems stupidity is universal world wide...His faith had little to do with that.

An elderly RC nun is shot dead in a land where some Muslim cleric says that people who take the piss out his religeon should be hunted down..as long as we're all clear about that then...........

I guess most of us are aware of the Pope's apologies and explanations but havn't read the whole text of his speech. But neither have those demonstrators who have been rabble-roused by ill-educated imams.
I didn't find anything objectionable in most of those Danish newspaper cartoons either but that didn't stop demonstrations by people who hadn't even seen them.
There's something very wrong about a religion/society which reacts so violently to imagined slurs.

Surely, if The Pope does not condemn Islam, he is failing in his duty?

John Ried said last month to me the only way to stop the imigrant influx to UK was to give them what they want before they leave their own country. Now I know you don't like him but does that make sense coz it does to me. Give them all broadband access and let them decide in the privacy of their own homes if Stacy Owen has nice nockers or not.....
