I'm guessing that more people want to watch the WC matches than those that don't. This makes football 'mainstream' during the tournement, and thus, should be on a 'mainstream' channel.

Putting football on an interactive channel will take out a large group of people who still haven't got digital tv. Maybe in the future it may happen, but not this WC, or the next Euro's.

It's also well known that sporting events people watch on tv, does get people out playing the viewed sport. I'd much rather any kids I have in the future, watch a brazilian free kick, than a 14 year old get pregnant on Coronation St, or another fuckin arguement at the Queen Vic!

That's an attitude which dates back to before the 1980s when if you wanted to see something you had to watch 'their' channel at a particular time by appointment.

At the time there was no other way of doing things.

And besides, people like that sort of populism and always have. It makes them feel part of something, and there's nothing wrong with that. Presently the mainstream is more splintered than ever before, with terrestrial television fighting off much competion from other media. As such, big events, be it sport, political or whatever, will always be at a premium (these days especially) due to their inclusive nature and the nature of television itself, which has always worked best as a shared medium that draws the masses together. This applies majorly to live events - the right here, right now appeal that other media simply can't compete with.
