It IS a different country. They have their own parliment and MPs, they have the Euro, and are members of the European Union in their own right.

Northern Ireland MPs attend the British parliment in London.

And that in a nushell is what the IRA have been complaining about all these years.

When Ireland was split in two (by the English) the rich northern, mainly Protestant, part became Northern Ireland, the poorer Southern, mainly Catholic, part became Ireland (or Eire, or Southern Ireland)

I understand that Irish citizens living in the UK have voting rights but the reverse isn't the case.

Since this thread is about 'What does British mean?' it seems inappropriate to say 'by the English' when referring to the split in Ireland as Lloyd George (born in Manchester but with Welsh parents and brought up in North Wales and Welsh-speaking) was Prime Minister at the time of the negotiations.

It's not as though it was an Iraq situation and England wanted the oil.......The majority of The North were loyal to the crown and had no desire to be a powerless minority in a united Catholic Ireland. In my eyes the split was therefore the only real option. Britian can't just abandon it's loyal citizens. Of course I understand why the minority of Catholics in N.I were as much against it as the protestants were in favour, and sympathise, but realistically N.I IS a seperate state, and is different from the south, if nothing else because of the two million protestants inhabiting it who feel and are British. I feel N.I has to remain independant with power shared equally ensuring the Catholics and protestant communities can live peacefully and put the past behind them and concentrate on a better future....hopefully yesterdays positive signs mean that is a step closer to reality.

Don't forget that we created the protestant majority in NI by importing them from Scotland.

According to your passport, you're British ... and legally there's no such nationality as English/Scottish/Welsh .... they're about as valid as stating your nationality as Geordie or Scouser.
