I think it's the way things are promoted and presented now as much as the music. There are still some great bands about, as watching Later with Jools Holland proves.
Pop music has been tainted by the marketing execs for some time now, but post-Spice Girls, marketing has become the be-all and end-all. Everything just seems so contrived now, every song has to have it's own dance routine, every single launched has to come with an "image"...
It ain't just me and my age that says this either - I've kissed goodbye to my 20's recently but have watched 80's TOTP shows on video with friends in their teens and early 20's who agree that even some of the more "throwaway" pop still sounds contemporary now and that whole package and presentation of the show still stands up today.

kevin rowland it was,he was in punk band the killjoys in the 70s.
