However, say country to most people in these isles and they'll get terrifying flashbacks of late nights waking up half-drunk during Grand Ole Opry, which is enough to put anyone off country for life. Either that or the awful, slick corporate country of Garth Brooks etc. So you can't blame them really.

Agree totally that most New Country (Faith Hill- Garth Brooks etc) is just embarrassing, and the old Country and Western of Kenny Rogers, Glen Campbell et al is not a lot better.

The whole alt.country movement (Cowboy Junkies, Alabama 3, Johnny Dowd etc) has produced some very interesting artists.

Country has given the world some top class songs and artists. I emphasise the word SOME here.
Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers, Patsy Cline to name just afew are artists that all open minded people should give a chance too.
