You can't dismiss all country music. What about Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Dylan in his 'Nashville Skyline' period, Woody Guthrie, Townes van Zandt; or more recently Lucinda Williams or Emmylou Harris?
The fact that most of you won't even have heard of some of these artists is proof of your ignorance!

The fact that most of us haven't heard of some of these artists is proof of desire to not wear denim with tassles.
Dude, the clue is in the name. There's a cunt in country for a reason.
The remaining letters are an anagram of ROY and there's always some peckerhead country crooner called Roy, right?
I can help you get over it. No, really.

Williams? Cash? Dylan? Guthrie?
Yep - never 'eard of 'em.
You're right to knock casual ignorance, but not to make such presumptions. However, say country to most people in these isles and they'll get terrifying flashbacks of late nights waking up half-drunk during Grand Ole Opry, which is enough to put anyone off country for life. Either that or the awful, slick corporate country of Garth Brooks etc. So you can't blame them really.
Now where's my Cowboy Junkies CD's?

I was being deliberately a bit provocative there.
Agree totally that most New Country (Faith Hill- Garth Brooks etc) is just embarrassing, and the old Country and Western of Kenny Rogers, Glen Campbell et al is not a lot better.
The whole alt.country movement (Cowboy Junkies, Alabama 3, Johnny Dowd etc) has produced some very interesting artists.
Loudon Wainwright III anyone?

As with other musical genres, perhaps the 'alt.' should be dropped in order to give 'country' a much wider spectrum.

I give up.
Country has given the world some top class songs and artists. I emphasise the word SOME here.
Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers, Patsy Cline to name just afew are artists that all open minded people should give a chance too.
There have been some shite ones too I give you garth Brooks, Billy Ray Cyrus and the annoying drivel from Faith Hill, Shania Twain and Leeanne Rimes (spelling)
Holden MacGroyn my dear chap I have never owned an article of clothing that could be described as tassled. You're obviously getting country music confussed with that dodgy pretentious Jon Bon Jovi twat or any number of 80's hair bands.
I had other points to make but have lost the ppint I was going to make, the disbelief has flustered me.
