Good point! I've never smoked but I know that if I go to a pub' encountering fag smoke is part of the deal and an intrinsic part of the "Pubscape." A pub' is a place to chill out after all and a lot of people chill out by smoking.

Round here there are a couple of really shit Weatherspoons pubs where there's no music, no smoking in certain sections and no smoking at the bar and loads of petty, twatty rules that are guaranteed to piss you off. Even worse is the "Beer Garden" of the Weatherspoons pub' in Saffron Walden which is like an open prison with a myriad of security cameras and numerous signs warning customers to "Keep Of The Grass." Shitholes!!

Good point, but didn't smoking/non-smoking areas become pointless partly through the introduction of open-plan interior layouts most, if not all, pubs, clubs etc opted for?

I'm not really old enough to recall if the separate smoking-rooms (or rather a separate NON-smoking room) that most pubs had in the 50s were actually workable, but I agree some sort of physical separation (plus efficient extractors) would be ideal.

Wetherspoons and their imitators (Puzzle Pub Co are another execrable example), I've noticed, seem run exactly the same way as Starbucks/Pret a Manger/Pizza Express......is there a pattern emerging here?

Oh hell yes...The Puzzle Pub, I would rather cut my own balls off with a penknife than go back to one of their dire pubs. Some music venues are now run by the Waffen SS too unfortunately, the last time I went to the Hammersmith Odeon or whatever the hell it's called this week it was a case of no cameras, no drinks in the actual part of the hall where you sit to "Enjoy" the show and loads of other grief which just makes you wonder why you ever bothered going to such a miserable shit-hole in the first place!!

Hypocrisy makes the world go round

Its ironic that some of these hypocrites who pass judgement are likely to be those that spend most of their free time stuffing their faces with junk food whilst on the Lounge watching the idiot box

Its a little known fact that leading a sedentary life even without pigging out on snack foods high in saturated fat is as bad as smoking when it comes to the cardiovascular system

Pass Judgment.....at your peril

cheers

It's those who trumpet loudest about freedom with a capital F that seem most keen on depriving others of theirs..........rum do, what?
