Spot on with your Irons remarks---two incredible performances from one actor.

It's often the case when Oscar gets it wrong. Lee Marvin (?) wins for Cat Ballou instead of Rod Steiger for The Pawnbroker; to recompense, Steiger is given it for In The Heat Of The Night when Paul Newman should have got it for Cool Hand Luke.

As for hammy Hopkins getting it for a pantomime villain portrayal of a sociopath---that was ridiculous. By playing it straight in Manhunter, Brian Cox was three times as chilling, while Tom Noonan (as Dollarhyde, the Tooth Fairy) in the same film overshadowed Cox.

For true, pant-wettingly scary portrayal of such a monster, see The Vanishing (the original Dutch version, not the dire Hollywood remake).

I would suggest Samuel L Jackson too. The shot of him losing out for best supporting actor in Pulp Fiction is fantastic as he clearly mouths ,'SHIT' when his name is not read out.

Lets not forget the travesty where Dances with Wolves beats Goodfellas or Forrest Gump beats Pulp Fiction! WTF!
