I'm sorry, I wrongly transposed the phrase 'The Last Word wrote' to another part of the text when all I wanted was to copy your excellent method of introducing personal favourites by way of a list. And we do all like lists don't we ? The quotation is from The Mikado.
I came to praise your intention, not to bury it.
And yes, Jour de Fete is for me - marginally - Tati's best work. It is certainly my favourite with M. Hulot's Holiday a close second. As for Kurosawa's earlier work, I do enjoy 'The Seven Samurai', 'Throne of Blood' and 'Yojimbo'. But digging out some old taped films in the attic yesterday, I found a tape of 'Dersu Uzala' from 1975, which we watched last night and is extraordinary.

Absloutely woodgnome. In fact I should said 'watch on dvd/video' because we can't get a couple of the films in the versions we want. As I said, my list was written immediately as they sprang to mind. I'm just winding myself up for some more categorised lists, saddo that I am.........

Pope of Greenwich Village, Kes, Snatch, High Plains Drifter, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Scum, Long Good Friday and Trains,Planes and Automobiles are the ones at the top of my head. Im sure others will follow

There are some fantastic films in these lists. And there will be plenty more to come , I hope.
Just a few : 'Kes', 'Diner', 'Gregory's Girl', 'The Magnificent Ambersons', 'The Wages of Fear', 'Black Narcissus'. All classics.

Ferris Buellers Day Off.....brilliantly quirky with great performances from all the cast
Planes,Trains & Automobiles...one of the few Steve Martin films I actually watched all the way through
Animal House....says it all about getting an education
