I'm not having that.Fair enough,England did have tough opposition in Croatia and Russia. But what about our dismal performances against Israel and Macedonia?,which effectively cost us qualification.

I certainly have no sympathy for McClaren. We simply were not good enough and the longer the England lads don't match country performance with their club performances,we'll continue to remain in football's doldrums.

How come Bobby Robson and Terry Venables managed to get 100% from their players?

I can't mention Sir Alf,as i was'nt in existence in 1966.

Fair enough point - but personally I think it's a bit of both.

Russia and Croatia are decent sides BUT had England not dropped points against the minnows (like Macedonia & Israel) early on in the qualifiers, and had they not conspired to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in just one of the final "big" games (Russia away and Croatia at home), then they'd have been home & dry.

Indeed take that Croatia game: Russia had already lost to Israel away (!!) which meant that England only needed a draw against the Croats at Wembley - and yet they still fucked it up.

Fact is that the England national team has consistently been less than the sum of its parts for the past 4 decades, plus McClaren (the coach that nobody really wanted in the first place) got it wrong tactically far too often.

Im not having that either as much as i love Sir Bobby England were very fortunate to get through the group stages in mexico 86 , only an injury to bryan robson that forced Robson senior to make tactical and personel changes did England start to look a reasonable side, also we were pathetic in Germany 88 where we failed to win a game, granted he did redeem himself in Italia 90 , as for El Tel the minimum expectation for a host nation at a major championship should be semis so he did nothing extraordinary.

My choice would have been to keep Hoddle in charge he had the making of a great side if the press hadnt got him sacked for non footballing reasons.

When alls said and done England never cruise through any qualifiying campaign

Fair point, but Hoddle did dig his own grave when he brought in Eileen Drewery, and made his religious beliefs public,Something that The Times hack Matthew Dickinson could'nt resist picking up on.

I also believe that Hoddle took the job on too early, only just having gained promotion to the Premiership with Swindon, before laying out the foundations for Chelsea in the early 90's.

Then again,we were in very desperate measures after the Graham Taylor years.

In Capello,i believe we do have the most adequate candidate since Bobby Robson.Shame he's not English though.modfather wrote:

I believe if the press and fans lay off Fabio Cappello could do very well for England,
when you mention Graham Taylor i have nightmares about Carlton Palmer so please please never mention this man again lol

I'm tipping Russia to beat Holland and Italy to beat Spain in the remaining quarter finals.

Why???

Because I based my Fantasy Euro 2008 team for the quarter finals on players from Portugal (out), Croatia (out) Holland and Spain.

!idontbelieveit!

Fuck that Bob,i'm littering my team with Germans,as their name must be on the trophy now. They'll be laughing after Croatia were so cruelly ko'd by the Turks.Turkey will go into that semi final without FIVE of their first teamers due to suspensions.

On the game itself, what a dismal game,on the same borefest scale as the Romania v France match, which only woke up in 2 mad minutes.

I was in two minds whether to feel sorry for the Croats. When one is 1-0 with seconds to go,you DO NOT allow the ball back into your own penalty area. But to go out on penalties is cruel, very cruel indeed.Bob Singleton wrote:

I could'nt help noticing one of the Stadiums in Switzerland is known as the Wankdorf Stadium, and FC Young Boys of Sion play their domestic matches there.

All we need now is Arsene Wenger to end up there as manager !laugh!

On tonights game,i'm going for a 5-0 Russia win !shock!.I've got every other Euro 2008 prediction wrong so far,so what the hell?.

Seriously,Holland to win on Penalties after a 2-2 draw.

I've given up trying to pick the winners.Group stage form seems to be irrlevant once the knockout phase begins

Germany over Portugal you can understand
Turkey over Croatia was a shocker of a result
Russia over Holland...I give up its all mental

Nothing for it but to Tip Italy to beat Spain 2-0...hope I'm wrong

All 3 favourites lose after resting their players in the 3rd game............bizarre

There's also a village in the German alps (in Upper Bavaria, close to the border with Austria) called WANK.

Brit tourists commonly make detours there to have their photo taken standing next to the sign as you enter the village.
