GNR Lies was done before I thought, I cant think straight now damnit but one in a million was pre appetite im sure I think it was just rereleased after appetite, hence some ppl get pissy about AFD being called a classic "debut"

Sorry, ID, but I'll stick with this and don't feel the need for any justification.

However, you're dead wrong dishing out the blame. The reason why modern rock has been so downhill is down to demographics: thanks to corporate-controlled heavy-exposure from MTV and radio conglomerate Clear Channel bands like Linkin Park/Limp Wristed/Wank 182 know they only have to appeal to the core audience of fourteen yr olds to break big and dominate. This leads to a situation where record companies forsake variety and end up chasing the same audience with similar product - endless Good Charlottes and such. Sure, the Pumpkins played the slick-video card. They had to, yet the sound was more varied and nuanced. They were pretty much the last big US rock act that wanted to appeal to all, and there's nowt wrong with that.

As for Guns 'n' Roses - what can I say? Sweet Child, Patience, Don't Cry................they were a cracking ballads band, certainly.

Sadly there idea of 'rock' was always laughable, whiny twaddle - their descent into cabaret both fitting and deserved.

Aw Last Word there was me thinking we agreed on music but alas no....GNR were not a fucking ballad band at all! You are mistaking a song with the subject matter of love as being a ballad. A ballad is usually acoustic and soppy but I wouldnt really call any of the songs on AFD a ballad. Sweet Child is rock with ballad lyrics thats all and as for proper rock welcome to the jungle, my michelle, its so easy, rocket queen etc are all excellent I dont get how you cannot like them!

As for the fucking Pumpkins, I think you are talking about a diggerent thing in terms of blame distribution - purely in terms of musical influence it was the shittier lazier weaker bands like the Pumpkins and Counting Crows that meant the quality of the early 90s wasnt continued on because people didnt need to push themselves so far.

I can sort of agree on the MTv 14 year old crowd thing but there are a lot of bands on MTV who arent exactly that commercial sounding (specially british) and still get airplay - face it there are no really great bands out there of true quality just waiting to be found. THats what true music fans who are kidding themselves use as an argument against nu-metal....

Before I go:

1. I'll agree that C*nting Crows were lazy, corn-fed cack of inspiration to no-one, but the reason why the quality of the early 90's wasn't built on was because those responsible for it either worsened or self-destructed. Thus, record companies - spotting market gaps and eager to continue what was started - began dishing out generic, pretty-video, pre-packaged corporate cash cows for a quick buck. Remember The Spin Doctors, 4-Non Blondes, Blind Lemon, and god knows who else who tail-ended Nirvana and co-horts? There's yer real blame.

2. I think you'll find MTV (US) and the MTV Europe we pick up markedly different in certain areas - especially with regards to UK acts. Come the mid-90's, of course, and the UK and US music scenes pretty much parted company from each other, seemingly irrevocably. They got Nu-metal. We got Britpop (never the twain etc....) Now I need a drink.

forgot how good the strawbs were i just recenty got hold of some tapes from local radio dj kenny everett played them on one,i only recall jon fiddler/peter hope evans from med head.

oh there were only 2 on a vid i have from 71 off of sky.
