I am going to go all geek here, so pay attention! because FCP or Final Cut Pro represents an example of the complete technological revolution that has occurred in the TV industry during the last 15 years.

In the early 1990's I used to edit and shoot non porn stuff. I had a WHOLE ROOM full of equipment, each Beta SP machine ( broadcastvideo player/ rec) was about ?10000 the total value of all the stuff was approx ?100,000 WHICH WAS DIRT CHEAP! at the time as a big broadcast edit suite could have been ?500,000. Anyway in my studio you could do basic editing with basic effects.I am NOT including price of a broadcast camcorder, which we'd hire, but I think they were at least ?30,000!

Then came along the digital revolution............

Now I have a large Macbook pro with all the trimmings a few big hard discs and FCP installed. This does EVERYTHING that my room full of stuff did, plus another load of effects and tasks (Music studios etc) which would have cost another ?50,000 at least, in the old days.

This little package I can carry under my arm does absolutely everything I used to do and a hundred times more and the whole lot including computer cost about ?3000! A snip if you don't mind me saying!

Now anyone can make a broadcast TV show. Although many "old timers" begrudge this as they believe that this has, "Lowered standards". This is from people who used to make, "On the Buses!" lol. (I'm only joking, On The Buses was a tour de force of television!!)

Anyway this is FCP (Which is part of a massive program called Final Cut Studio, if you are interested.

Remember reading an interview with Paul Hardcastle, who showed the interviewer a garage full of equipment, literally packed to the rafters. "Thats all the stuff I used to record "19" he said"

"These days I do it all on my mackbook."

And I believe Damon Albarn/Gorillaz have put together their new album entirely on an iPad.

Jeeeeem...how well does your MacBookPro handle very long video scenes shot in HiDef?

Mine can manage them using iMovie11, but it's incredibly (unfeasibly) slow at every single task when running Final Cut.

There's no way to soup up a MacBookPro is there? I'm rather assuming that the only way to go is to buy a quad core tower Mac...

Yes and the new FCP supports Hyperthreading, if you happen to have a new Quad core Macbook Pro (Which I haven't unfortunately) Means rendering times will be slashed!! Hallelujah, it means I can spend more time collecting insects!!

You shouldn't need to "Soup up" a Macbook Pro. I've got 2 of them both full of ram but that's all. Just make sure you are using Firewire 800 drives and you understand the mechanics of encoding your original material into the various codecs that FCP edits in for example Pro res 1920x1080 HQ is quite good for editing AVCHD although it does use up alot of disc space so you could instead turn to Pro res 1920x1080 LT or proxy which is a perfectly good means to encode and edit in, obviously YOU MUST make sure that all your sequence settings marry up the the encoding values that you have chosen otherwise it could be a complete DISASTER and make sure you are not forgetting to choose the correct format to output in. Now let me get back to my stamp collection!!grin!

Both my Macbooks fly, so if you are having trouble there must be some kind of incompatibility going on.
