If you have only had oral sex with somebody then oral detection is fine. Both Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are very aggresive in the way they are spread including using adult toys as a "carrier"
Like wise if you have had anal sex only it would be necessary to take swabs of around the rectum to isolate non blood born bacteria. or less prone to blood born.
Blood Born, such as Herpes, Syphilis and HPV, HIV and Hep B and C can be identified within the blood within hours of the sample being processed.
The NHS dont use the most expensive tests as you can imagine, infact we know of some GUM Clinics that use urine dip sticks to indicate bacterial load and then if that is positive they run a full test.
We always run a full test as thats what you have paid for. In addition we do cervicle smears, and we advise on vaccination and deliver Hep B vaccination.
Hep B incidently runs at a rate of 1 in every 12 people carry the virus. Its a 1,000 times more transmisable than HIV and can be passed on as easily as sharing a razor or a comb!
When we detect a problem with somebodies results we call them immediately, and then if necessary meet them or have a late (upto 22:00) appointment to get treatment to them as we know to you a film shoot missed is money missed so we understand the urgency of prompt treatment.
Anyway hope that helps clear up some myths! We should go on Myth busters!
