My current kit is a brace of D2x's 20-25mm 2.8, 28-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8.
And I have a 300mm 2.8 if I ever want to go wild outdoors!

Re: Canon or Nikon?
my kit is D3 with D300 back up and pics are great, but then again just for web pix i have used a compact.
I also had the equivalent Canon kit 2 years ago but switched over.
Canon appeared to be easier on focus, but nikon better in low light.
Probably all the same now.
Am more interested in the cheaper hard drive vidcams now.
Instead of shooting with ?9000 worth of Z1, can we all now use hand cams????

Considering using (definately trialling) the HD video on my iPhone 4 for some of the pretend amateur stuff I do. Quality is fab.

Re: Canon or Nikon?
I used to sell cameras, long before the digital era, but have kept reasonably up to date with trends.
What no-one has yet mentioned is that you should try picking them both up and feeling what they're like to hold. Do they feel well screwed together? Does one feel more plasticky than the other? Also, see which one has the more intuitive controls: if you can switch it on and take a picture without having to reach page 463 of the manual, it will give you more confidence.
While you've got the cameras, look through the viewfinder and decide which gives the better, sharper, more contrasty view. If you're a spectacle wearer, can you clearly see to the edges of the frame and the numeric display?
If you're planning to buy a body with a kit lens, see which one focuses faster. You won't be able to tell which lens is sharper without a direct comparison of images taken with each.
If the deal with the kit lens doesn't seem that favourable, consider buying the body and then getting a second-hand lens of a higher specification. I've bought (and sold for a profit - if you're lucky and know what you're doing) a load of lenses via eBay. The advantage there is, if you buy a lens and don't like it, you should get a similar price if you choose to re-sell.
I currently use a Nikon D200, but started out with a Minolta XD7 in 1983 and would have stayed with that brand if their autofocus camera bodies hadn't been more expensive than Nikon's. I've now used Nikons for 22 years and never had a faulty one yet, though to be fair I'm not a heavy user.
Lens-wise, I have a Tokina 28-70 ATX f2.6-f2.8 as my main lens, used for 95% of shooting. In low light, I use either a 50mm f1.4 or 85mm f1.8 Nikkor. If I want a more dramatic wide-angle image or I'm in a confined space, I use a Nikkor 18-35 and for more long distance shots I have a Sigma 70-210 f2.8, with a matched 2x converter when necessary (though that combination is slow to focus).
I have no recent experience of Canon cameras, but they always used to focus marginally faster than the Nikons, mainly due to the focus motors being in the lenses, though it's possible now to get that type of lens for a Nikon.
Apologies for the length of the post, but I hope it's helpful. Good luck with your search.
Regards,
Adrian
