Its a bloomin' awkward, bulky great 21-pin connector found on audio-visual equipment, that constantly causes problems with its easily bent pins, and loosely fitting plugs. It was introduced in late 80s by Philips (I think) who dreampt of a universal connector that would be used on all European equipment. Lucky Yanks never got the damn thing, but virtually all European models come with it now.
Other names for it are Euroscart or Peritel.

With regards to macrovision protection, I found it was easily by-passed by using a PC with a DVD drive ad TV-Out.

Expensive if you don't already have the neccessary but works well. Used a single headphone to phono cable to get stereo sound too.

Regarding our previous discussion on trhis topic JJ. I expect your wishing you listened to my simple explanation now.

The first thing is to stop attempting to tune your VCR in to the output from the DVD. Set your VCR channel to "AV" or "line-" or "L-". You cant tune the VCRs UHF tuner to the DVDS output because a scart is not using radio frequencys so cant be picked up by the vcrs tuner. I know your used to using an rf lead to link two vcrs which does require the recording vcr to be tuned to the UHF output of the playing VCR (which will be an unused frequency in the TV broadcast band UHF channels 21-69). But with scarts tuning is irrelevant as its an electrical signal not a radio signal. You just need to select the AV channel on your vcr which corresponds to the scart socket on your vcr which the DVD is connected to.

As for macrovision you can get a macrovision buster pretty cheap these days but not many discs have it anyway.

PS I dont want a prize but if you reckon you can allow me to talk you through it without shouting me down for being too technical we could get it sorted fairly quickly. It might be painfull to have to be under "instruction" from a mere mortal such as myself. But if you can swallow your pride for a short time I would be happy to help.

Thanks for all the suggestions, which ranged from the starkly incomprehensible to the mildly convoluted.
Have drawn up a shortlist.......and bought some Nurofen.
