Whatever you choose, the answer is divisible by nine. 48 less 12 (4+8) is 36. 47 less 11 (4+7) gives 36. 46 less 10 (4+6) gives 36. 53 less 8 (5+3) gives 45. Etc.

This is how it works:

A two digit figure, say 37, is equal to 10*3 + 7, so we can express it as 10x + y, where x and y can be any number between 0 and 9.
Deduct the two digits and you get 10x + y - x - y. This equals 9x. Therefore the result is always a factor of 9, which means that it is always divisible by 9.
