.....and I believe this is why Alec prefers DVD for capping purposes.

They certainly used to be available on VHS. I remember them being advertised for ?30 each on the old Rendezvous/AdultX satellite TV channel about 3 years ago.

VHS rocks, there,s nowt better than a great stack of videos a man can be proud of, even if they do take up half your house, the fun Iv,e had hiding them from me mother/sister/various g/friends etc, not to mention taking the label "Big Girls Cum Twice" off, and replacing it with Titanic, then watching in horror as yer 15yr old niece says,Great,I love that movie, can we put it on. argggggghhhhhhhhhhhh.

No, I prefer VHS because I can get bmp stills from an analogue signal which is better than jpegs from mpegs for fiddling about with.

My Manhattan sl-1 dvd player has 2x 4x upto 64x ff.
I am not sure what you want such fine control for. You can have slow ff (1/2 1/4 18), slow reverse. It also has 'repeat selected segment' function. Choice the start and end and it cycles through the scene (not that easy with video?).

DVD at the moment isn't perfect, I've had a problem with a dvd from dvdsuburbansluts (is it me, the player or the disc?).

Not eveyrone has the same player. I can't afford to buy a separate player for every desirable feature - they don't all have an identical list of features.

Among other reasons, I want absolute control in order to get a clear view of the face where there is only a fleeting glimpse. I know that makes me a rarity on this forum, but it's the face that gives the ID. Again among other things, I'm talking about playing a VHS to the PC compared to playing a DVD via something like Power DVD on the PC where FF is only achieved by using the slider, a very crude implement (I know I don't have the latest version before you say it).

I haven't gone beyond 4X on my DVD player, though it will go higher, but it's complicated by the fact that the remote FF button doubles as the move to next scene button if you don't hold it down long enough, which is a considerable pain in the behind.

why would you buy a player with such a dodgy remote set up, in the first place? ;-)

personally, i find the 100X invaluable - especially, when foraging one of those chapterless, golden oldie reissues. btw, if you hit the pause button repeatedly, you can advance the image a single frame at a time.

Don't think you're a rarity: I go for the face first, and then look for blemishes/tats etc. for confirmation.

Thanks. Still no use for capping though unless I lug into the otehr room and link it to the PC Via PCTV vision.

There is that: but if it's a choice between convenience of use and space-saving, then roll on the new extension (now reaching into Park Lane, after having demolished the V&A and Science Museum).
Perhaps I can get a Lottery Grant: unless the Dome is still available......
