Isn't Gary Glitter's music still available? I've not checked but I'm sure you can buy it. Every time a song is played on TV or radio the performer, and/or writer of it, gets money. I assume Glitter was getting paid every time a news feature appeared about his evil crimes, because they would always show a clip of him performing one of his songs for a few seconds in the news story. How ironic is that? An infamous story about an infamous man having been convicted of a wicked crime, and he received money from it. That all applied previously when he was out of jail, or when he later came out of jail - when coverage of his nasty activities would appear on the news. Money will no doubt be earned this week from the clips of his songs which appear in the current news reports about him being found guilty. As he'll probably never now get out I imagine the money will go to his relatives - all of whom have now likely disowned him, but will probably still cash these cheques.

Gary Glitter's family...

I heard once that he has grown up children, probably got grandchildren too. Could you imagine what they must think, seeing him outed as a paedo and jailed? As I said in my comment just now about how royalties would be paid everytime one of his songs appears in a news feature about his convictions - they will probably be getting the cheques from that now, and will probably take the money with open arms. They would almost certainly have disowned him now, and that would likely be more devastating for him than being banged-up.

More mistakes, Max

Neither he nor his relatives get a penny from his songs being played ? although where they are played I have no idea. He sold the rights to Universal many years ago.

You can play up to 30 seconds of a piece of music in news clips without exposing yourself to paying for it. (or at least that was the situation when I was at college)

We have need of you again, great king.

Unfortunately not true. He sold PARTS of his back catalogue, not all of it.

Glitter continues to earn both publishing and performing royalties and considerable sums too. He will continue to earn whilst in prison.

Max's claim that the money will go to his relatives is unfounded. It will go to Glitter himself to dispose of however he likes. If he thinks he's going to die in prison he can still make a will. Prisoners in the UK are allowed to make a will, unless sent to a secure psychiatric unit.

I'm not sure if it applies to other stations but the BBC can legally use any piece of music however they see fit without having to pay royalties or asking permission. This doesn't apply to DVD, CD's etc. That's why you'll often hear a piece of music on the televised version but either a different piece or a complete deletion when it's released on home media.

I didn't know that, I heard he earned a fortune from Oasis sampling his song 'Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again' on their 'Morning Glory' album.

As I thought, he still gets royalties. My thinking that his relatives will now get the money was because he will probably be in prison forever and they are the closest to him. They might be estranged now, I don't know, but will probably take the cash with open arms - as I've said.

If that's the case the networks are probably ensuring they play 29 seconds or under. I find it odd how royalties are paid whenever a song appears on TV or radio: I remember watching Wimbledon one year and rain stopped play, Cliff Richard, who was in the crowd, got up and started a sing-song of one of his songs and the crowd sang along with him. The whole thing was broadcast. Afterwards they cut to presenter Des Lynam who said "the BBC will probably get a big bill now". I'm sure Cliff didn't do the sing-song in order to get a cheque from the broadcaster later, but it is probable he did get a cheque subsequently.
