On the programme people were saying that some people may become muslim in jail because they will then be protected by the other muslims. 'Attack one, attack all' was said - or words to that effect. Therefore if you are a muslim and someone beats you up they will feel the wrath of all the other muslims in the prison, each one has the others' back. Safety in numbers is one reason for converting whilst inside, according to this programme. To go from being a moderate muslim to being an extremist muslim whilst inside is probably more about trying to feel an even greater sense of belonging, and also if you feel inadequate and lost as a person then the one everyone listens to and gravitates towards will have some sort or an appeal for you. So the radical muslim in the prison whilst the strong views, that everyone else hangs around, will be the one you'll take your lead from.
