His idea seems to be along the lines of what would it be like if a 19 century slave behaved like a cool 70s soul brother? In a word, stupid.

Django doesnt behave like a cool 70;s soul brother. The music choices juxtapose that. Then again theres classic Morricone in there too among others

Thats the great thing about writers who are creative enough to give you an interesting alternative to the norm. The big screen have been providing us ideas like this since it was commercially viable to doso

Again, you could say the same about a lot of movies...James Bond (secret agent saves the world and beds lots of beauties, over and over again), Star Wars (jedi knights, space ships and space battles), The Matrix...Its all entertainment.

He borrowed from a lot of movies that inspired him and he talked about them.

Kill Bill was based on The Bride. Django is a hybrid of classic spaghetti westerns, Jackie brown was an Elmore Leonard adaptation crossed with 70's blaxploitation flicks which starred his hero Pam Grier...No secret at all. if anyhting he eulogises those movies and one way to get him to stick around buying the beers is to get him to talk about movies.

Inglorious Bastards is his take on the classic war movies ie The Dirty Dozen et al...No secret at all

People borrow from movies all the time.

Who among us (except Kendo) makes original porn films? We just all have our own styles doing the same thing. Porn is not unique to anyone (except Kendo) !laugh!

Tarantino isnt the only modern director to pay homage with a good quality western. Sam Raimi famed for The Evil Dead movie flexes his muscles with a great movie called The Quick & The Dead with a younger DiCaprio as Gene Hackmans son

The film has a great cast of actors too

Interesting comments there. Tarantino is quite unique in that he only appears every so often. He has made few films over a 22 year period so when one does come out there is a lot of interest. One criticism I have is that he often seems to convey the idea that bad people are kind of cool and therefore likeable. Most of his characters are people who would be viewed as very nasty indeed if they were not in a 'cool' film made by a 'cool' director. I remember comparing the characters of Jools from Pulp Fiction and Ordell from Jackie Brown with a friend of mine once, we were very familiar with both movies. He said that Jools was quite a nice person, Ordell certainly was not. I could barely tell the difference, both are nasty people (or would be viewed as such in any other films or mediums) but I felt reluctant to go as far as to condemn one or either as the films have a cool cache to them and, in an emperors-new-clothes kind of way, found myself wanting to speak favourably about both people - rather like how people will not put-down a certain rock band that is seen as happening, of-the-moment, cutting edge, and 'cool', even if the singer acts like a dick all the time and does and says stupid things. I seem to have got caught up in the positive-only viewpoints that people seem to have about such things. The person observing isn't even really biting their tongue, they've almost convinced themselves that nothing bad should be said because it is the accepted thing to be in favour. So digging deep into my thinking I conclude that Jools probably was nicer than Ordell, but at the forefront of my thinking I am of the view that both are ok - as the film is a 'cool movie' and the director is a 'cool dood'. It's very odd. I remember people years ago saying that Hannibal Lecter was 'cool' - and it seemed they were saying that for no other reason than he was the main star of a film everyone was talking about and that everyone was going to see.

His "take on classic war movies" included American soldiers scalping Germans and carving swastikas into their foreheads. Sorry, but it's just too stupid to be taken seriously, and if he thinks it's a joke, he's too stupid to be taken seriously. He seems to be fascinated by violence, but he strikes me as the sort of person who'd shit himself if he ever got in a fight. The plot of "The Dirty Dozen" made sense, "Inglorious Basterds" is rubbish on every level.

Max, you really puzzle me man

Jules and Ordell were both arseholes for their professions dealt in death and exploitation of the living. I know these types and both are snakes not to be trusted. They are only cool as far as their swagger allows and not once did I think Taratino was suggesting they were cool.

I got the whole evil has its charm and seduction but one could look to the popularity of Scorseses gangster films like Goodfellas which spawned The Sopranos (Dont no one dare tell me that wasnt inspired by Goodfellas) It was the Goodfellas TV show with Tony Soprano playing Paulie "he may have moved slow but thats because Paulie never had to move for anybody"

All the characters were charming in their own way but they were straight up stone cold killers and thats what makes it so frightening. Even when they kill their own kind they do it in a nice way, take them out to dinner then suffocate them with plastic bags and slit their throats and leave them to bleed out. That bit is not cool

I dont think Tarantinos critics get his movies at all but then its all about the art of communication. Some will get it and some wont.

He aint vanilla thats for sure

As for nto appearing t be negative, get outta town with that, this whole forum is constantly about the negative! How much positivity do you read on this forum on a daily basis. the internet has given rise to the moaners and groaners and hissy bitchers behind fake names.

The real hypocrissy is that those same posters havent got the guts to do it to the faces of those they slag off behind their keyboards

One Eyed Jack:

How did you manage to see it before it came out?

I've noticed that there's a lot of comments about how good the film is a good five days BEFORE it was released. It's well known that a screener/preview copy of DVD quality is doing the rounds.

The reason I mention this is because the people like One Eyed Jack, who constantly attack torrent sites and it's user's, are watching pirated movies and, therefore, encouraging it.

So, basically, you're saying it's only wrong if it's porn and affects your business and income? If it doesn't affect you it's fair game?
