"British TV can't hold a candle to the dramas coming out of the States. As said above, even the better Brit stuff is still mired in political correctness (token ethnics & gays always shown in a "positive" light, highly intelligent go-ahead women running things, evil/incompetent/corrupt men etc.)"

How right you are. Brit TV is crippled in this way. I reckon US dramas are so good because the writers come from all walks of life, backgrounds, ethnicities etc and they are chosen for their writing skills. In the UK I reckon writing is still in the stranglehold of the Oxbridge Mafia and immediate environs and this is why they are so buried in the rut of political correctness and tweeness.

Can you imagine how cringing Breaking Bad would have been if it had been a Brit series? Walter would have been posh, clever but intrinically stupid, Jesse would HAVE HAD TO BE FROM DA HOOD and would have been there to wag a knowing finger at Walter and generally shown him the hopelessness of his vacuous, middle-aged, middle-class life. You would have never been permitted to see both sides of the drug world, ie the downside AND the fun side. It would have been embarrassing, finger wagging, nannying, tosh.
