That's right, it does happen. It never happened when I was a young soldier but seems to have reared its' ugly head in early 70's. As a SNCO I and my colleagues were trained to spot drug abuse among the junior ranks. However, it now encompasses every serving person. It is not perhaps endemic but a serious enough problem for the MoD to impliment random drug checks. My son has taken 4 checks in the last 18 years and passed each one.. It seems that it is the young jack the lad, or ladette, who indulge when they visit clubs where drugs are readily availlable, and they take the chance that they will not be required to take a drug test the next morning. Some make it, some don't.
I have never ever understood the attraction of a drug that shortens ones life the way that heroin and cocaine derivatives do. As for nicotine, I gave it up 28 years ago, and as for alcohol, well, I do not intend giving that up, not for anyone. I really enjoy converting beer, wine and spirits into piss. It gives me great pleasure, especially in company with friends where we all participate.

In 1970 I was based for 3 months at a camp in Perth WA when the assult carrier HMS Bulwalk docked at Fremantle, and a number of us from the camp were invited on board, I remember then being told that there were 4 young ratings on board who had all been found with/using drugs and were being kept in the brig for the whole voyage and would face a court martial on their return to Plymouth, a very serious offence then.

As far as Harry goes, I have little time for him. Do you remember the 'offical' pictures taken during his tour in Afganistan? Him riding round the compound on a motorbike - where did that come from, not part of his kit, nicked from some local villager I guess. Also pictures of him sitting behind and fireing a machine gun, a GPMG or Browning 50cal, I think the commentry was that he was "shooting at insurgents", what the fuck was he doing that for, thats the job of a trained MG section and not some tosser posing for pictures - the whole thing was posed, a PR exercise by the MOD/Royal Family to show what a good job he was doing. And to cap it all off Charlie meets him at Brize and he gets off the plane still in his combats with part of his body armour on and the rest slung over his shoulder, as if on the flight he didnt have time to change, again all posed for us to swallow the story of the returning hero. There was so much bullshit there I could smell it, and perhaps the reason he has never been back is that all the British media have refused to go along with this sort of con again
