Aren't the states with the highest proportion of Jewish voters traditionally Democratic?

This is correct but that reflects a great deal of politiking over the decades to try and keep that vote onboard. And of late there has been many mutterings about Obama not doing enough to support Israel.

Hence the Romney visit etc.

I take your point David, but I was not referring to a visit this week by a
Republican politico wanting to look good for the jewish-american lobby -
I was specifically referring to a visit by the US Defence Secretary. While
agreeing that opposition to a war would exist in the USA if American troops
were committed, that does not prevent Panetta from discussing joint US/
Israeli strategy and also what US reaction would be if Israel made some
attack on Iran. My guess is US public opinion would be led by either a
Democrat or Republican White House to defend their rottweiler.....its so
easy, David, for US politicians to warble platitudes about peace or try to
seem like doves while actually leaving the dirty business of war to their
Israeli friends.

I know.

Both Republican and Democrats are trying to keep the Jewish vote on side. Letting Israel get on with it is one thing; for the US to have a military involvement is a completely different thing and could be disastrous in the build up to an election.
