I saw that a few weeks ago on an ITV programme about Public Information Films, Mimifflur. It still looked disturbing, even today!

Maelstrom was a 'for T.V.' BBC thriller/horror series from the mid-80's, set in Scandinavia. I've not seen it since then but would love to, as it scared the cack out of me then. It would be interesting to see how it aged.

'Whistle and I'll come for you' has been on TV at Christmas, for the last couple of years. Roughly an hour of taught, tense horror

The other memorable one, was the Woman in Black, made for T.V. version, from 1989.
If you find it on You Tube (The Woman in Black (1989) - "That" Scene) go ahead and take a look. No huge effects etc, nice and simple. I do like any version of that film though.

I always seem to find the more straightforward, ghost/horror type films the most scary and effective. The genre that rarely fails to shit me up, is Victorian/Georgian set ghost stories. Incl. - the Woman in Black, the Others, Haunted, etc. !nervous!

I can't think of any monster/over-the-top type movie, or TV show, that has come close, except maybe party political broadcasts...of any type.

Yep, that scene! I didn't know what hit me the first time I saw it!

I know what you mean about those type of films (The Others, The Innocents, The Haunting (60s), etc). They're slower, far more creepy. Most of the violent, gory horror movies are just repellant, not actually scary at all (there are a few exceptions, though). But something that builds a chilly atmosphere, draws you in, hits you with a few subtle scares, but saves something big for the finish - That's truly scary.

I liked the new version of TWIB a lot, but I still think the original is the more frightening.

The Signalman was very good, too. They don't seem to make scary TV stuff like that these days.

That was VERY disturbing stuff because the characters in it were so ordinary, there were no big "stars" and it was so graphic yet without resorting to loads of OTT special effects. It was all so "real".

You really could identify with the characters, there were no "heros" saving the day and almost all of them ended up dead (maybe even all of them eventually, can't quite recall now. It's been ages since I've watched it).

It was doubly disturbing for me as it was set in my home town and there were places shown that I recognised, and a friend of mine and her mother were extras in it.

Now this is easy to answer - the scariest thing was "Quatermass and the Pit",
Nigel Kneale`s science fiction seriel about how life started on earth and the
"monsters" from Mars (the Hammer film several years later was good but not
a patch on the TV version). It terrified me and all my mates....For some
reason "horror" as a genre is not much on TV these days, but back then the
BBC were willing to experiment.
Other scary things - seeing Mary Whitehouse, that thin-lipped pile of misery,
or suffering Margaret Thatcher in her prime....

The Wonga adds scare me. It's not just the interest rates either.

Now I know this isn?t really that old and not made in the UK, but has anyone seen the movie, Megan is missing? Not as much as scary but disturbingly unnerving and realistic. I didn?t sleep properly for weeks. If you haven?t, then don?t, is my advice.

Ghostwatch, the BBC's Halloween offering from 1992.

A "live" Poltergeist investigation. I remember sitting up watching this thinking it would be something fun and slightly Halloween'ish like the Paul Daniels death stunt and getting the crap scared out of me at the shows climax.

Sad to say they haven't come close to anything as scary since then.
