There are parallels here with the Video Nasties hysteria of the early 1980s, in which the Mail also took a leading role. They've made a big thing about a teenager supposedly traumatised by Porn and I recall Mary Whitehouse using the same tactic back then. No surprise to see Labour jumping on the bandwagon, they're for the nanny state and proud of it, something the Mail's pilloried them for the years. On every subject except this one of course.
At the risk of sounding thick though, how would an opt-in system actually work effectively?

Re: Daily Mail - Anti porn hysteria!
You say that but then a day before I saw this
About time too I'd say. I was wondering when someone was actually going to say this
I believe porn will be truly in the hands of the people in the future. If porn exists in terms of professional productions it will be on a whole new level because the technology will be there to facilitate it and seperate the men from the boys or the women from the girls as the case may be.
It will be just as splintered as it is on polar opposites with all gradations inbetween. I dont think it will be such a big deal in the future either which is why so much effort is being made to try and reign it in now ie ATVOD and the sexualisation of children stuff going on (The Bailey Report)...Somewhere at the heart of all this isnt about caring about the kids (thats just the pitch) but something more sinister like control, censorship and most definitely money comes with that too.
Porn I notice, seems to be the new weapon in black mailing important people and celebs.
Business as usual then

More Liberal Fascism...we are doing this to protect YOU! From who I have no fucking idea mind you.
Re: Daily Mail - Anti porn hysteria!
The use of harm to kids is what they try - its an easy way to drum up support and get a voice going. The truth is that the government see a way of revenue generation that is not within their full control. Porn can make money and those in the know work it so that they get maximum return without paying the right taxes and such.
This is upsetting for the government as they need to be able to control all revenue streams.
Like the hooking that was supposedly through trafficing - how many have we picked up through trafficing ? Again the establishment want to control and eradicate this revenue stream as it is something that they have no control over or can tap into.

I am sure you would be delighted for us in the UK to be crushed by the jackboot of the law Frank, so you could say "I told you so" The problem is, you have not lived here since the days of Mary Whitehouse's reign of terror and bundles of fake porn being squeezed through letterboxes by Soho sex shop thugs in exchange for ?30 a pop!
Your prediction of doom wont happen, The Daily Mail is an irrelevance to most people, porn is part and parcel of our way of life. The worst thing is porn is now the butt of jokes on panel shows. The government has a lot more things to worry about than porn, saving Cameron from being booted out in a scandal for one.
However your point about High Court cases and porn producers crawling out of the sewers (As the Establishment imagines) and, "Demanding their rights like" is valid and will certainly annoy the wrong people.
As I said, I believe opting in is not a problem and we already do this on phones. I think what we should be campaigning for is what they do in Turkey. THEY BLOCK ALL PORN TUBE SITES but you can access normal porn sites! This fucks over the pirates good and proper LOL
Wouldn't this be a brilliant idea if it were introduced here?

Yes it would be Jim. It would mean the people that really want your stuff will actually pay for it instead of those who randomly just download the stuff just for the fact it is free and just out there and it would get people off our backs about the kids aspect too.
You would think this was common sense but common sense seems to be lacking when it comes to politicians pushing their own agendas

Re: Daily Mail - Anti porn hysteria!
I remember when I was in der Vaterland in 1970 and saw the availability of hardcore. Never seemed to hear much about any denegrating effects it had on the buyers. I never saw any sex mad blokes chasing birds on the streets. Legalised porn and prostitution licensed and under control seemed to work from what I and others saw.
Denmark and Sweden seemed to live with it comfortably also from what I saw when there.
So, what is the problem? Is it a hangover from Mary fucking Whitehouse?

Not just the Daily Mail.
I personally believe it's got fuck all to do with Mr Bendover did but everything to do with a band of tools the majority being feminists who know fuck all about the industry but who hate it just because it's something they wouldn't be in.
They can't sell their message so use a much more plausible one which is namely the protection of children.
They forget this is resolved by parental responsibility choosing to say parents are to thick to understand the technology their children use or raise any concerns about why kids sadly want to watch porn because it makes them to uncomfortable and putting things down to parental responsibility just isn't good for the ballot box, in terms of it doesn't get the headline and in turn them known as having what they claim is policy.
The solution is very easy but as per the industry won't be willing to help itself and that's to make on-line content unavailable for free along with the obvious shutting down of the free sites which should be achieved in the same way it is for films and music.

Opt-in is a threat. What's being suggested that an entire home is locked out, not just a solitary phone. Unless you are the bill payer you won't be able to get it changed - that's bad news for anyone in a flatshare, student accomodation, tied housing, a hotel, teenagers or even granddad living with his daughter.
Even if you are the bill payer opting in might be visible to your spouse, elderly parents, tenants or children. Actually it will be very obvious the first time porn comes up on what they think is a filtered system.
It's quite true that some papers cater for Mr & Mrs Angry and go from one hate campaign to the next. I'm fully expecting a story about how the European Court of Rights encourages Muslim Gypsies on benefits to flood the UK with porn and the effect that would have on house prices. Doesn't make sense but those papers don't need to.
Thing is no MP will openly admit to supporting porn and a lot think there are votes from opposing it. Right now the Government needs popularlity. The economy is up the duff, people are getting pay cuts and redundancy. They are even pissing off Civil Servants and the Police by cutting pay and pensions.
Porn filters would also lead to lots of other filters. Gambling. Sex-advice. Religion. Anarchist politics. Some Governments would love an excuse to clamp down on the internet.
Let them know voters are interested in sex, sign the petition for strong material on TV and help turn the tide. http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/13222
