When he lost the last mayoral election, Livingstone made a living with speeches, writing, bit of broadcasting etc etc. And he employed two or three people related to this work. As a result he set up a limited company, something which millions of self-employed people do in the UK. In some industry sectors like IT work for example, you would struggle to get anyone to employ you for a contract if you didn't have a limited company.

Peter struggles to understand basic accounting principles. In the Peter world, all tax for people not being in the employee box, falls into one of two areas:
1. Tax evasion (illegal)
2. Tax avoidance (legal) everybody else who decides to put the cost of a set of biros through a business, for example.

Unfortunately this is hopelessly wrong.
2. is divided into two parts.

2.1 Tax avoidance which usually involves certainly in corporate Britain, companies paying anything up to several millions to financial advisers to help them take advantage of convoluted loopholes which the Revenue would never envisage having been used. Tax avoidance loopholes may result in being made illegal.

2.2 Day to day tax recording/planning where you/your accountant claims expenses such as travel, stationery etc etc against their company business sales in a way which the Revenue have outlined as perfectly acceptable and for which they provide info/guidelines on Revenue websites.
