In situations like this thousands of people could die either way. When the U.S. pulled out of South Asia millions of people still died. We were also fighting the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. When we left they took over the country.

Israel has the capabilites to attack Iran, but they probably couldn't do a complete job of destroying Iran's nuclear weapons facilities. I highly doubt the U. S. will attack Iran. Obama isn't a warmonger, like Bush. But If one of republican candidates wins the election, then Iran might be attacked. A war with Iran could be very costly, and I don't think U.S. public is ready for another war at this moment.

The problem is Iran is militarily, no Iraq. I believe if things got out of hand, the only way to repel their enormous army would be to use tactical nuclear weapons and this is where it will go horribly wrong, because Putin wouldn't hesitate a second in supplying Iran with appropriate weaponry to retaliate in kind. I suspect these weapons are already in place in Iran as a contingency in the event of attack. These people are not stupid they have had years to make plans.

This is what we are deaing with, during the Iran-Iraq war, to say, overwealm a machine post, the Iranians simply attacked en masse, the same as soldier ants can overwealm a much larger and more powerful foe.

Truly, this is an army to be reckoned with an army that will fight to the death!!

I have several degrees from the U.S. Army War College. Iran's army is big, but they can't use it for offensive actions just for defensive. The U.S. know the Iranians are probably the most nationalist people on Earth, so I highyly doubt we you mount a ground invasion. For offensive actions you need to resupply, and equip a massive army on the move in a place like Iraq. The U. S. air power would destroy them. Look at what happened to Saddam's million man army in the First Gulf War. Iran has average military equipment. The Chinese, Indians, Iranian buy lots military equipmentfrom the Russians, but they know the Russians are untrustworthy partners. Russians have never delivered the S-300 missiles the Iranians severals years back. The missile are state of the art, and would make and air attack on Iran much more costly. Really the U. S. is the only military that can place 100,000 toops anywhere in the world, and properly resupply, equip them, and properly protect them from their ground or air threats.

No offence, but Iraq had been bled dry by a decade of crippling sanctions before the US Army strolled in, the Iraqi army was demoralised and useless. At the end of the day modern armies like the US army with every hi tech weapon known to man can be brought to its knees by home made IED's and a population fighting for its homeland.

Look at Vietnam, over 7,000,000 tons of bombs were dropped by the US and in the end the war was won by a bunch of little guys with AK47's, cunning and a gut load of moral fortitude!

No modern, cumbersome army can beat that! Let's hope the Iranians don't defend their country with the same resolve. Yes you are right, every missile system and airfield will be knocked out within 24 hours in an attack on Iran and the US army with a few Israeli units far behind, will be parading in playing the Stars & Stripes at full volume through loud hailers.

But then the real war will start, the war led by insurgents, or as we like to call them "Terrorists" or as the Iranians would call them , "Freedom fighters". This war is fought with suicide bombers, IED,s, executions and terror and I'm afraid no modern army has ever won such a war in the long term. Look at the debacle in Afghanistan, with firstly the British in the 1800's, then the Russians and now us!

The Nazis had a modicum of success when tackling "terrorists", they'd just execute the inhabitants of a nearby village as a reprisal.

I believe Mike was on about the first Gulf war, which I fought in (no, not in the iraqi army !wink! ). The sanctions against Iraq only started after they'd invaded Kuwait, in 1990.

Before that, almost the opposite was true, we (the west) supported Iraq, particularly during the Iran/Iraq war, which lasted 'til 1988.

The second Gulf conflict was far different, after a decade of sanctions etc, the Iraqi army wasn't the force it once was.

The first Gulf war was a case of 'Get orf my land' type conflict i.e. booting them out of Kuwait and chasing them miles into Iraq but stopping short of a full-on counter invasion.

The second Gulf war was the whole deal, including far more fighting in built up areas and the destruction of the governmental infrastructure, which led to the ensuing chaos. !shitstorm!

I would think the Iranian armed forces would be of a similar size and standard to the iraqi forces of 1990-91, however, they'll obviously be equipped with far more modern weaponary, now it's 20+ years on. They'll also be better prepared, after seeing their neighbour's fate.

Some Europeans need to stop acting, so high and mighty. Saddam killed hundreds of thousands of people during his time in paper, and would killed alot more If was stiil in power. The Iraqis are doing a good job of running that country. We are the policemen of the world, because Europe can't get its act together. We are the reason that China hasn't already invaded Taiwan. IF will be several decades before Chinese trys to go against the U. S. Navy. And we have helped turn South Korea in to a very rich country and with others. U. S. military is by far the most powerful military in the world. Our naval aircraft fleet is bigger than all other countries entire air forces, expect for India, Russia, and China.

We won every major battle with NVA and Viet Cong in the Vietnam War. The Tet Offensive broke our support at home for the war. Our generals were saying we were winning the war whenn Tet broke out. Public opinion shifted, and our politicans gave up on the war. We were slow winning the war. Plus the Russians were giving the a ton Vietnamnese of state the art equipment. North Vietnam was one of the most heavily defended air spaces in the world during the Vietnam War.


We aren't going to invade Iran our Army and Marine Corp are to small for an invasion of Iran. Eric Shinseki are Army Cheif of staff said we would need 200,000 toops for the invasion. Rumsfeld sent in far few troops, and the rest is history. So we would need atleast 600,000 toops for the invasion of Iran.Because Iran has almost 3 times the people of Iraq. If there's war It will be just air strikes but on a much more massive scale of what happened in Libya. The Iranians will send isurgents into Iraq and Afghanistan, so we have to be careful.
