You also forgot to mention why we'd need surface-to-air missiles as a defence against terrorism. I doubt many terrorists have fighter planes and missiles at hand.

Because you can never be too careful when this green and pleasant land (wipe away tear at this point) is under threat from air, sea and land.
It's the price of eternal vigilance, Mr Slater and allows us to sleep well in our beds (separate ones I hasten to stress to all forumites)
Eternal vigilance!

I suppose they might have a stolen light aircraft. The deployment of such missdiles does suggest that there will be an awfully large exclusion zone, or a ban on non scheduled flights for the duration. And where will the debris from a successful 'hit' fall to earth and on who? I presume that contingency plans are in hand in case of attack by al-quaeda submarine up the river Lee.
Has there been an audit done on the effect of these bloody games will have on civil liberties, right to assemble, etc. Already by-laws are in place that will allow the olympic officials and the sponsors' private security personnel to forcibly enter private dwellings in the area if those homes are displaying any sort of what might be deemed unofficial advertising detrimental to corporate interests. I have no doubt that arbitrary stop and search will be employed on a massive scale.

Did I mention Slough?
"I presume that contingency plans are in hand in case of attack by al-quaeda submarine up the river Lee".
This is the kind of innovative, out of the box thinking we need in the MOD. I am sure you could find yourself a highly paid consultancy in the MOD with spiffing ideas like this one.

I await the call. Of course I wouldn't want to be too official; perhaps I could just be a 'friend and business associate' of someone there. Perhaps a minister of state.
As for the sub idea, Columbian drug smugglers have already used diy ones to shift there stashes.

I was under the impression no other law enforcement agencies were allowed to be "tooled up" on UK soil? Officially that is....of course when a Mossad guy dropped 3 Arabs outside a London hotel in the late 70's did raise a few eyebrows. As for the 2012 games you bet some restrictions on normal life will be coming...for a start there will be non stop traffic routes, taxi drivers are already planning to whack up their prices....hotel prices will go totally and utterly insane for any poor sod who has to visit for genuiune reason i.e. funeral, wedding etc..

There used to be that fiction. If you imagine that the President of the United States would disarm his Secret Service agents and put his life in the hands of the British police then you're dreaming. As for the Games, it's a ?9 billion vanity project. Britain will win some medals, at a cost of several hundred million for each one. Still, if it keeps Seb Coe happy, it must be a good idea. How the fuck did Paris lose?
