Rodders/ "But then I don't invest in crap and that rag was crap".

How many times have you watched Antique Roadshow when some OAP presents them with the contents of their rubbish bin, to which the "Expert" solemnly pronounces, "Well if this went to auction, it would probably fetch no less than, ?25,000!" At which the OAP feigns surprise and shock!

People on AR always seem to have, "Crap" that's worth a fortune!

Quite Rodders, quite right ! Personally, Mr Slip, I have never seen any crap
on Antiques Roadshow, just very beautiful things from a time when
craftmanship and beauty went hand in hand. And if an OAP finds a treasure
trove in a sack of old stuff, best of luck to them !

It's a numbers game. Just look at their queues, there's bound to be some idiot sitting on a unloved piece of treasure in there.

Pieces of presumed rubbish that are worth 25 grand are still rare though. Not too long ago there was a glass pot which their owners had bought at a boot fair and didn't like. When the expert pointed out the Lalique mark the audience were audibly gasping, except that the owners still didn't have a clue. Then the expert elaborated that the manufacturing process meant that this was not mass produced but a unique piece and the penny dropped...

With the last NOWT issue - no chance. There were millions of copies printed, more than in a normal week, with plenty of advance warning that it was the last issue... This will always remain a cheap piece, because it will never be rare.

Many many moons ago when I was stamp collecting as a youngster I noticed a peculiarity about GDR stamps: just about any series of stamps they issued were quite cheap (catalogue prices), but always with one exception, there was always one expensive stamp in the series. This was a purely artificial creation by the East German post office to fleece stamp collectors in the West. And it worked. Rarity knocked the price up.

I think it is a mistake to confuse NotW the Sun the Star etc with newspapers I'd class them as comics. I think the Star had it right when they just made up their stories i.e. Double Decker found on Moon, freddie Starr ate my hamster and so on.
For me it becomes offensive when these papers start promoting themselves as guardians of the public welfare with crusading journalists rather than as a load of self serving chancers who are now lying and whinging at the public's "over reaction" to their illegal activities.

Double Decker found on Moon - That was the Daily Sport.
Freddie Starr ate my hamster - The Sun .

Hi Spider
Thanks for the clarification shows how difficult it is to distinguish between them,
personally wouldn't use them to line my cat's litter tray
