"I have no wish to see others suffer, but I do not hear that the rest of the EU is helping to out levels. "

According to the OECD figures for 2010, Norway, Luxemburg, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium all spent a greater proportion of gross national income than the UK did on foreign aid. THe UK spent about the same as Finland and Ireland.

I guess the story that Belgium spends a greater proportion of GNI on foreign aid than the UK, doesn't help sell too many newspapers or increase TV audiences which is why you dont hear about it.

"Natural selection"

Quite right Charles. I knew that it was best to take no notice when you were being beaten up by a gang of angry, old ladies in Kelvingrove Park.

The West as a whole has spent a trillion dollars in aid to Africa since the 1950s. Back then countries like South Korea and Malaysia had the same standard of living as Africans, since when they have powered ahead, and much of Africa has sunk backwards into tribalism and banditry. Has the aid helped, or has it just meant that African governments never had to pay their way, as they knew bleeding heart westerners would do it for them?

"If you are happy to give your money away let me know . how fortunate you are."

I would be much happier to give my money to someone suffering from the worst drought in 60 years than to give it to you, a fully paid up member of UK PLC. You tell us you have a "full plate". Lucky you! Others are not quite so lucky.

The dumb ignorance of some people on this forum amazes me....the
simple fact is that - and some folks may find this hard to believe or
choose to ignore it - but Great Britain is one of the richest countries on
the planet, (in banking and insurance terms the City of London is the
most successful and important globally) and life, generally speaking,
is good !!! We should be more cautious how/when we give foreign aid,
demand to see how that money is going to be used and the likely results.
That said, it is our moral duty as a nation to help the less fortunate.
