There are manners - please, thankyou, excuse me, holding doors open for others etc - and etiquette which is a snob's way of intimidating people and making them feel uneasy.

I'm confident she's a well mannered young lady even if she doesn't deal in obsequious handwritten notes.

It is hard to pass judgment in a story like this.....we do not know all the
facts and I do not see a reference to the "dog" in the lady`s letter so we
only have the Daily Mail and the obviously hurt young woman to vouch for
this.
Like andy, I tend to favour the house owner. If, as she clearly shows, good
manners matter a lot to her, then I suspect her guest, like many young
women these days, do not know how to behave in upper middle class
circles. Everything suggests to me that that the girl was rather "loud" in
her opinions and did not , as a guest in someone`s house for the first
time, mind, as my old Mum used to say, "her P`s and Q`s" (polite and
quiet).
I also am quite offended by Charles`s use of the "c" word, for centuries
the strongest word in the english language and used far too much these
days. If a few more people protested about bad manners and bad
language then standards of respect for others, obvious in so many aspects
of life today, would not be going down the toilet.

Wether this is all a load of PR bollocks or not, the line "No one gets married in a castle unless they own it" is one of the best I've heard all year. Footballers and WAGS please take note!

I have to say that on the whole I'm with the step-mum.

While I think the hand written card to say thank you is a little pass? now (though not the actual action of thanking one's host), I agree with her general sentiments about an ostentatious wedding that her family can't actually afford.

I also agree with the general sentiment of "when in Rome..." If you're staying in someone else's house and everyone bar you is up and about by 9.00am but you lounge around in bed until, say, 11.00am, as far as I'm concerned, that's not on.

I also agree with the step mum that, other than for reasons of allergies or for religious reasons, the guest shouldn't make "demands" regarding what they will and will not eat (though a sympathetic host would also make discreet enquiries ahead of time to find out preferences)

Manners have declined shockingly over the last 30 or so years, and I applaud anyone trying to fight the tide of such poor manners and behaviour.
