True enough, as soon as people realise they are printing worthless dollars like there's no tomorrow the game is up. The Federal Reserve was set up in 1913, since when the dollar has lost 95% of its value. Not long left for the other 5% I fear.

Turan. Some countries benefitted and some certainly did not. The exporting of our parliamentary system was a very good thing, the way we do it here is now the way they do it in many other countries and those who have that system view it as the best way to run things.

Some countries, like Swaziland (and I had a discussion with someone from there once), feel Britain did great things in the country and the country still benefits today. There were of course terrible things done around the world too, the worst case was probably the genocide in Tasmania where every single native was killed. There is NOT ONE left.

One thing I've aways found a bit ironic though is that if people from abroad think that the main reason Britain became wealthy was because we looted other countries in order to get it, and those people would condemn that if asked, it is rather odd that those people seem so keen to have a nicer life on the legacy of it all by coming and settling in Britain and having a nicer, more affluent, life here. To enjoy the spoils of something is to endorse the thing, surely? Just a thought.

The person I spoke to from Swaziland said the British introduced and developed everything from advanced farming methods to the building of hospitals, schools, universities, more advanced banking methods, tourism in the latter stages of the colony, and many others things that she told me the country still benefits from today. She said if you speak to very old people in Swaziland they all have a good word to say about the British. The people they really hated were the Afrikana's (the whites who became prominent a bit further south some time later) because, as she put it, "they hated black people and treated us worse than they treated their own animals".

The former colonies of Britain that have parliamentary democracy, one person one vote, the ability to elect and remove politicans, the right to demonstate and complain without anything happening to you as a result, and so on, all have that because we pioneered it and left it behind when we departed. There are many such countries, but the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, are four examples.

As for people coming here and enjoying the spoils of us looting quite a lot of the world, many are here from countries we had nothing to do with, yet those people wanted and still want to come, and settle here in vast numbers. Also, I think many that did come from our former Empire in the post-war years would say they have a better time of it here, in terms of the availabiliy of housing, Social Security money if they need it if they are not working, free education, free healthcare, the right to have the Police investigated on their behalf if an officer does something they think is objectionable, free access to the Courts, etc, than a cousin of theirs does have with regard to all those things in the country their family is originally from.

Gasp ! Splutter! Come again??? Us brits,mainly because of our american cousins have meddled in the affairs of most coutries or some country that country was an afiliate to.

I seem to remember we entered the last war, not because Hitler was tearing up europe around him but because they invaded Poland.

I bet most brits today would be wondering why we even bothered. There are plenty of examples since, mainly involving oil and being the look out boy to american interests.

There are many good points, eloquently elaborated upon, here.

But one - major - theme is conspicuous bt its absence: the volume, frequency and intensity of violent crime in Jamaica.

Such - current - violence is bound to make one misty eyed for colonial rule and tough justice, swiftly dispensed (whether fair or otherwise).
