Thanks for those tips Sam. I've calmed down a bit now and I've already downloaded Mint 10 32 bit for my laptop. I haven't tried it yet as I'm a bit busy with other Windows stuff on my new machine but I can't wait to try it out. My old 32 bit based laptop is due for a reload soon anyway as it's starting to hang and take forever to do simple tasks etc, so I'll try it on that first (along with a reinstalled Windows XP afresh to make a fair comparrison).
Just the idea of a system that doesn't crash is enough of a recommendation for me. There's nothing worse when your having a wank watching Silvia Saint pulling cucumbers out of her cunt and the bloody 'pooter shuts down!

Only had one crash with Windows 7 in over 2 years. If it's crashing it'll be a rogue programme/driver or faulty hardware.
Make sure you downloaded and burned the live disk for mint. You can test it out booting from the cd-rom then and no need to install.

These new operating systems make $Billions for Microsoft every time they release a new one.
They are full of bugs and already existing software is very often, slightly incompatible with the new operating system. This "slight" incompatibility is what has you tearing your hair out and screaming.
Software for Macs just seems to always work as you would expect it to. They are very forgiving, how many times have you had the insulting message on a PC that says, "YOU have committed an ILLEGAL operation!!!!" the PC then goes into an endless loop that will not clear? Even if you shut the machine down and reboot, the problem remains.
On a Mac on the rare occasion you get a freeze, even if you have half a dozed apps open, if you power down and start up, everything has cleared including the bug and then you can just start again.
PC's are made for red-faced blokes on trains, with short sleeved white shirts with pens in their pockets, who shout on their mobiles at people who haven't met their sales targets. They're good for writing letters and adding up stuff, but they were never really meant for anything more. If you are doing anything creative then you really need to take a sledge hammer to it and make your life easy, get a Mac.

Had a quick try of the 32 bit version of Mint 10 on my old laptop - using it from the disc only and I'm impressed! Even though it has to be slower running from the disc drive, it's STILL quicker than my one week old set up of Windows 7.
Anyway, I got that pissed off with 7 today I ran Active Killdisk's HDD destroyer and turned my SSD into 60 GB of '0's. Slightly silly I know - but it was a lovely feeling to watch Windows 7 being 'up graded'.
Windows is a virus and I have removed it.

Still don't understand how you're having so much trouble with Windows 7. It's the best OS available, overall, in my opinion. And if Mint, running off a cd-rom is faster than Windows 7 running off your ram then something sounds seriously wrong with your hardware or you've masses of crapware and viruses on your PC.
But, yeah, Mint is a good OS for someone who's new to Linux and doesn't want to be typing in su, apt-get and sudo commands in the Terminal. I used Ubuntu and Fedora distros 90% of the time the 3 years before Windows 7 RC was released for testing.

While Apple poison their dollar-a-day workers in sweatshops in South East Asia to get their billions.

These downsides exist because there are many, many, many different models and hardware combinations of PC. Unlike Apple, Microsoft have a massive business based model where they have to make sure many things are backward compatible (many businesses still run Windows 2000). Apple move forward and drop things just like that. Not a problem for the average home user but if you've a business with 2000 Apple machines and ?10,000sworth of software then updating to the latest OS could leave you completely high and dry.
On a Mac on the rare occasion you get a freeze, even if you have half a dozed apps open, if you power down and start up, everything has cleared including the bug and then you can just start again.
Had a Powerbook for 5 years and occasionally had to take out the battery because it wouldn't power down. OS isn't immune at all.

Jesus, you've swallowed those Apple ads hook, line and sinker, Jim. How about PCs are also for families on minimum wage, the young and pensioners who can't justify spending ?1000-?2000 for a machine when there are very capable Windows machines for ?400-?500 out there? In these recent financial times, when many are losing their jobs and homes, PCs may be their only option.
They're good for writing letters and adding up stuff, but they were never really meant for anything more.
Keep watching those ads, Jim !laugh!

I was delighted to find that Linux Mint actually had a GUI. I imagined Linux was for geeks who can tell jokes in binary eg:
"Did ya hear about the guy who bought his girlfriend a 01000110010? She was so 00110000011 she got him a 11001110010!" (I imagine this is really funny to a CPU)."
I'm having a bit of trouble getting the 64 bit edition to load onto my newly clean-up machine, but I might have gotten a corrupted download. I'll keep at it.
This is coming from my old XP laptop. Rock solid.

Maybe. the 64bit version should install as easily as the 32bit version. It would only be flash/programme/driver issues you may run in to (though you shouldn't) these days. Did you check the md5 hash?

I've got the .exe application. I'm just getting around to finding out how to make it check the raw download in 7. I'm a dickhead when it comes to pooters but it appears I have to run it's operation via a DOS console (or an emulation of it) with the path to the downloaded file. I kept a copy of the md5 number from the download site.

Think I used MD5 Checker in XP. Surely there'll be a Win7 version.
*googles*..............yes:
